After all, with Oriana around, Zara would be well taken care of.

“In that case, we’ll take our leave,” Niamh said with a polite smile. “Let Zara stay home and spend more time with you. We’ll come back in a few days to take her to Jindiwood.”

“Alright.”

Cordell and Niamh exchanged a few more courtesies before leaving with Kenny, who hadn’t said a single word the entire time.

“Goodbye.”

The Radcliffe family members escorted them out. Only when the car disappeared down the road did Darius and Willa finally turn back inside.

The sleek black Maybach glided away from the estate.

From the back seat, Kenny glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Zara, who had turned and walked off without even a look back. He let out a derisive snort.

He truly couldn’t understand. “Mom,” he said, turning toward the backseat, “aren’t you the one who hates vain women the most? Like mother, like daughter–so why are you being so polite to the Radcliffe family?”

They’d never shown that much patience even when negotiating billion–dollar contracts!

Niamh’s smile faded slightly. She smoothed the faint lines at the corner of her mouth, gave her son a sidelong glance, and said sharply, “We are different. Don’t mix the two.”

She went on, “Besides, no matter what, Zara will be your wife, and a legitimate member of our family, and the mother of our grandchild. We must give her the respect she’s due. Otherwise, when you two eventually divorce, your child will grow up being ridiculed, hearing people say his mother was looked down on by his father’s family. That would be disgraceful.”

Kenny froze, scratching the back of his head. He hadn’t thought about it that way.

The truth was, the idea of becoming a father still didn’t feel real to him at all.

Zara’s belly was still flat.

The baby wouldn’t even be born for another nine months.

Kenny clearly didn’t want another lecture. He shoved in his earbuds and closed his eyes, letting music drown them out.

Cordell and Niamh exchanged a helpless look, both furious yet powerless.

Their son had been hurt badly enough that he might never be able to have another child. The baby Zara carried was their family’s only hope.

Kenny ended up useless, and they were still young enough to raise their grandchild themselves.

They had learned their lesson. This time, they wouldn’t let anything go wrong again.

Back at the Radcliffe residence, Zara was still happily gaming when Darius and Willa returned from seeing the guests off. They sat down on either side of her and waited quietly for her to finish her match.

Zara felt the chill of their silent stares creeping down her neck. She set down her phone with a guilty smile. “Why are you both looking at me like that?”

Darius‘ face was dark. “Talk. Since when have you been dating behind our backs?”

Zara slipped up immediately. “I wasn’t dating anyone!”

“Oh, really? You weren’t dating, but somehow you’re pregnant?” Willa asked, incredulous.

Zara nearly choked on her own spit.

“I mean–what I meant was, I didn’t hide anything! You guys just never asked.”

There was no way she could tell them she’d gotten pregnant after a one–night stand with a stranger.

If they knew that, they’d probably skin her alive.

Her parents let out a breath of relief, but their expressions quickly hardened again. “Marriage. is a big deal, Zara,” Willa said sternly. “Why didn’t you tell us before bringing him home?”

“Oh, come on, Dad. You really think I’d let myself suffer? Don’t worry. The Caldwell family’s amazing. Oriana checked them out for me already. I’m set for an easy, happy life.”

“Oriana’s situation is different,” Willa said gently but firmly. “The Caldwell family may be good, but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you.”

Looking at her carefree daughter, Willa couldn’t help sighing. Her voice softened.

“Marriage and motherhood are no small matters. For a woman, it’s practically a second chance at choosing her life. You have to take it seriously.”

Zara leaned back against the sofa, still grinning lazily. “I am taking it seriously! The Caldwell family is rich, good–looking, and can even help our business. Plus, you met them just now- they seemed fine, didn’t they?”

“We only want you to live happily, without worry,” Darius said. “As for the family business, you don’t need to concern yourself with it. I’ll handle it. Kenny’s parents were indeed polite and well–mannered, but-”
