Chapter 405 Doubts
Darius frowned, pressing his lips together in thought. “I get the feeling Kenny isn’t exactly thrilled about this marriage.”
Zara’s lips curved into a smug little smile.
Before coming to Seabar, she had actually had a serious talk with Niamh.
Zara had made it clear that she hoped the Caldwell family would take this marriage seriously -at least well enough to look convincing in front of her parents.
Niamh had readily agreed. To be fair, it wasn’t hard to see that the Caldwell family genuinely valued the baby she was carrying; otherwise, they wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to cooperate.
Still, what Zara said earlier wasn’t wrong; the Caldwell family was a decent one. If they only cared about the child, they could have treated her and the Radcliffe family with polite indifference. Yet they hadn’t shown any disdain or hostility toward her.
Noah, in particular, had been nothing but kind and considerate to her–without a trace of pretense. Today marked the second time the Caldwell family had visited. During their first meeting a few days ago, Noah had even come along, bringing with him lavish gifts for the Radcliffe family.
Their courtesy had been impeccable.
So aside from Kenny, who never failed to complain, the entire Caldwell family had done a flawless job maintaining appearances.
Zara was quite satisfied with this cooperation.
It reassured her; she believed that when the time came for her child to grow up in the Caldwell household, he would be happy and well cared for.
She also thought of Oriana. With such a good family, Oriana was bound to be happy, too.
“Zara, did you hear what I just said?”
Darius‘ deep, serious voice pulled her back from her drifting thoughts.
Zara blinked and stammered, “Y–yeah, I heard you.”
Darius and Willa’s expressions softened a little. “Good. Then call him now.”

“Huh? Call who?” Zara froze, blinking in confusion.
That nearly made Darius explode. His hand twitched as if he was about to smack her, but he stopped himself midair, took a deep breath, and dropped it back down.
“You just agreed to let Kenny stay here for a few days, didn’t you? Perfect. We can take that chance to evaluate him and see if he’s fit to be your husband and a father to your child!”
What?
Let Kenny come live here?
That has to be a joke!
If Kenny didn’t cause trouble, that would already be a miracle–how could anyone expect him to cooperate?
Zara wanted to bite her tongue off. What on earth had she been thinking when she agreed to that?
“Fine, I’ll go upstairs-”
“No. You’ll do it right here. On speaker. We’ll be listening,” Darius said firmly. “You really need to start using that brain of yours.”
With both parents watching her closely, Zara had no way out. She pouted, reluctantly pulling out her phone and dialing Kenny’s number.
The first call rang twice–then was abruptly hung up.
Zara rolled her eyes.
Unbelievable. That idiot!
Thinking fast, she forced a sheepish grin. “Oops, I must’ve hit the wrong button.”
“Call again,” Darius ordered.
“Yes, sir,” Zara said.
Internally, Zara was cursing Kenny from his scalp to his toenails. If he dared mess this up, she swore she’d tear him apart herself.
On the second call, Zara nervously stared at the phone screen, fearing it would be hung up on again.

It rang four or five times before Kenny finally picked up.

His loud, blunt voice came through the speaker. “What do you want? I’m taking a dump.”
Zara pinched her nose, disgusted.
“My parents are inviting you to stay here for a few days,” she said in her sweetest voice, though her tone trembled slightly. “They said we should, you know, spend more time together–get closer. So, pack your stuff and come over.”
In truth, she wanted nothing more than to reach through the phone and strangle him, terrified he’d blurt out something stupid.
Luckily, Kenny–still on the toilet–seemed unexpectedly calm. After a brief pause, he said, “Alright. Later. I’ll come once I’m done.”
Zara nearly cried with relief. “Sure, take your time! Make sure you, uh, finish properly before you come!”
And before Kenny could respond, she hung up–fast, worried he would expose even in the next second.
When Kenny arrived, she’d make sure to drill into him exactly what not to say. If he ruined her plan, she’d skin him alive.
Meanwhile, in the hotel bathroom, Kenny just sat there, blinking at his phone.
Something about her tone hadn’t sounded exactly friendly.
Whatever. For the baby’s sake, he decided to let it slide.
Zara, mission complete, placed her phone back on the table and beamed. “There! Done. You two can relax now.”
Darius and Willa stared at her for a long moment, suspicion flickering in their eyes. Something about all this felt off, but they couldn’t quite put their finger on it.
Maybe it was just that both kids were still too young–and not nearly steady enough to be trusted.
