Terrified, Kenny rushed to clamp a hand over Zara’s mouth. “Micah’s on vacation. Why are you butting in? Ow! Zara!!”

Niamh smacked the back of his head. “Must you shout? You’ll scare Zara and the baby!”

Kenny stared, stunned, cradling his hand and pointing at the broken skin. “Mom? Are you even my mother? She bit me first! I’m getting a rabies shot, I swear…”

Niamh swatted him again. “Why can’t you be more like Micah? For his wife, Micah would throw himself in front of acid. And you? It’s already scabbed over and you’re still whining. Be a man. Look at yourself.”

Kenny, already dazed from the first strike, was left utterly speechless.

Micah pressed his lips into a thin line. “I don’t agree.”

Noah narrowed his eyes. “What now?”

“Zara and Kenny are newlyweds. They’re on their honeymoon. They should go alone. Having us there would be awkward.”

Zara pushed back. “Oh, come on. We’re practically an old married couple. What honeymoon? It wouldn’t be awkward at all. I think it sounds lovely.”

Micah drew a slow breath, his jaw tight. “You’re pregnant. The itinerary is too demanding.”

“It’s fine. I’m strong as an ox. I can even help Oriana look after you.”

“Unnecessary,” Micah cut in, his tone icy.

“It is necessary! We could really help!” Zara persisted.

Oriana watched their tug–of–war, a dull throb building in her temples.

Before she could devise a compromise, both sets of eyes locked onto her.

“Oriana, say something.”

“Sweetheart, we already discussed this.”

Oriana’s head was absolutely pounding now!

Zara pouted, playing the victim. Micah’s voice grew strained, thick with wounded pride.

Caught in the crossfire, Oriana felt torn apart.

Finally, Zara relented first.

Seeing Oriana’s genuine distress, she sniffled, her eyes growing red as she released her grip. “Forget it. I shouldn’t keep pushing and putting Oriana in a difficult position. She’s not just my best friend anymore–she has a family, a husband. I can’t expect her to spend time with me like she used to. I’ll just stay home. If it’s boring, so be it. I’ll sulk alone until I get used to it.”

She reached for him, but he sidestepped her touch. He stood. “I have things to handle.”

Oriana rose quickly. “I’ll come with you.”

“No. Stay with Zara. Kieran, with me.”

With that, Micah strode out, Kieran in tow.

Oriana stood frozen.

Zara was shocked. She hadn’t expected Micah to react so strongly, to simply walk away.

“Oriana, maybe I really shouldn’t go?”

Now she worried she’d gone too far.

Watching Micah’s retreating back, Oriana pressed her lips together and gently pulled Zara along. “Let’s not decide yet. I’ll see how things are when I get home tonight.”

Inside the Maybach, from the driver’s seat, Kieran cast a cautious glance into the rearview mirror. “Sir, Mrs. Caldwell was likely caught in the middle as well…”

Micah pressed his fingers to his temples. “I’m not angry with her. To the hospital. I’ve missed several treatments. We’re seeing Director Smith.”

Micah had spent the better part of a fortnight in Sunrise Village, putting all his scheduled treatments on hold. Nelson Smith had called repeatedly, only to be hung up on every time.
