After a long while, Oriana was finally overwhelmed. She shut her eyes and yanked open the drawer-
After opening her eyes, she saw the caller, and relief flooded her–like she could finally breathe.
See the call was going to time out, Oriana picked up the phone and swiped to answer.
“Zara.”
“Oriana! Are you okay? Where are you–by the roadside or on a rooftop?!”
Zara’s voice practically burst through the receiver, as if wanting to reach through and hug her tightly.
Oriana laughed softly. Her earlier troubled mood was easily dispelled by Zara’s words.
“Zara, how did you know?”
Then she guessed, “Lily told you?”
“Duh! Were you planning to keep it from me? She said you barely touched that amazing steak. That’s super fishy!”
Feigning outrage, Zara added, “Oriana, you don’t share with me anymore! Confess–do you have a new bestie?!”
Oriana leaned back, relaxing her grip on the phone.
“Zara, I wasn’t hiding it.
“It’s just…”
She softened her voice. “I haven’t figured out how to face it yet.”
Zara instantly tensed up, “What did that jerk say? How did you get caught up in this? At first, I couldn’t even believe it. It makes no sense–you’ve moved on from him, so how are you still shaken? Unless…”
Her voice went tight. “Unless- it’s about Micah?”
“Yeah.”
Oriana realized there was no escaping this tangled mess. With Zara by her side, she felt a pull to lean on her for support.
The trust Oriana felt toward Zara was rare and unwavering, a bond she knew she couldn’t replace with anyone else.
Oriana told her everything.
“What the hell? So Micah’s devoted act was fake? He fooled you–and me?!”

After pondering for a while, she muttered to herself, “It doesn’t add up. Even if he wanted to crush Grant, why sacrifice himself? Why marry you personally? He could’ve found some other guy, like his assistant Kieran, to fool you instead. He’s a rich young master–why bother do it himself?”
A faint spark lit up Oriana’s eyes. “Zara… I think he really does care about me. It’s just…”
“It’s just that he schemed to get you, deceived you, and even lied about his eyes. All of it!”
Zara nailed it.
A heavy silence followed.
Zara was stumped and murmured, “Yeah… if he liked you all this time and was keeping an eye on you, why didn’t he just say it? Why all these schemes? And why pretend he was blind? To make you let your guard down? What was he after?”
Oriana really wanted to know what was he after.
Even if he was a regular guy, his care and thoughtfulness would have won her over eventually–blind or
not.
Plus, the equipment he used really was designed to make things easier for blind people.
While the two of them wrestled with their thoughts, Kenny went into the room on Zara’s end.
Kenny and Zara were still in a cold war.
But they’d been living together, and most of Kenny’s things were still in the room.
Now that they were back from their trip, they still weren’t speaking, but if he needed anything, Kenny would wander in and help himself.
Like now, he barged in without a word, hunting for the game console charger.
Zara was already tense, and Kenny had just walked straight into the storm.
A bitter, sarcastic laugh escaped her. She said, “Of course. Men are all the same. And the Caldwells? Definitely no different!”
Kenny snapped fast. “Zara, what the hell’s your problem? What have I done?”
“Yeah, you pissed me off!”
