Once the heavy doors clicked shut, Seraphina sank into the plush sofa, resting a protective hand over her stomach.
Sensing the sudden shift in her mood, Little Bean asked softly, "What are you thinking about, Mommy?"
Seraphina didn't answer right away.
She was thinking about Zelda.
All those years at the Simmons Estate, she remembered every toxic word and cruel scheme Zelda had thrown her way. She hadn't forgotten; she just never had the energy to fight back.
But this was crossing a line.
This time, Zelda wanted her dead. More importantly, she wanted the unborn child in her womb dead.
Little Bean's voice echoed again, laced with a comforting warmth. "You still have me and Daddy, Mommy. Don't be sad."
Seraphina gently rubbed her belly. "I'm fine, sweetie. I just never realized her hatred ran deep enough to want me dead."
Sounding far too mature for a fetus, Little Bean declared, "There are good people and bad people in this world, Mommy. Everyone goes through different things, so their brains just work differently."
Seraphina couldn't help but chuckle. "You little wise guy. You sure know a lot."
Little Bean puffed up with pride. "Of course I do!"
Right on cue, the low rumble of a car engine echoed from the driveway.
Little Bean instantly perked up. "Daddy's home!"
"How is that possible? Wasn't he stuck in a meeting?"
No sooner had the words left Seraphina's mouth than the front door swung open.
Lucian strode into the foyer.
Little Bean immediately urged, "Mommy, look at his face! See if he looks super worried about us!"
Prompted by Little Bean's prodding, Seraphina found herself studying Lucian's features closely.
But to her dismay, his striking face was as stoic and unreadable as ever. The same intimidating aura he always carried. Where was this supposed panic?
This little munchkin was definitely making things up.
Lucian walked over and took a seat right beside her.
