Zelda spent hours pacing the floor, her nerves frayed to the absolute limit, but Brody remained a ghost.
Every time she tried to call, it went straight to voicemail.
Pure panic began to set in. Had Brody actually been caught by the Langford family?
The more she analyzed it, the more suffocated she felt. She practically wore a track into the living room rug.
Samuel was at the office, and Sienna was still upstairs sleeping.
Gritting her teeth, Zelda finally decided she couldn't just sit there and wait for the sky to fall.
She quickly changed into a nondescript outfit, threw on a pair of oversized sunglasses, and flagged down a taxi off the main road.
Once inside, she barked an order at the driver: "Take me to the Southside District."
The cab driver hit the gas.
Brody had run the Southside for years, and he had never been the type to leave a job hanging without a word.
Even if he had completely botched the hit, he owed her an explanation.
But instead, he had vanished into thin air.
Zelda was terrified that something catastrophic had compromised the plan.
The taxi finally rolled to a stop outside the dilapidated entrance of The Crimson Den.
Zelda threw some cash at the driver and marched straight into the dingy establishment.
Having been there countless times before, she navigated the murky layout with practiced ease.
The ground floor was choked with thick cigarette smoke. A dozen shirtless, rough-looking men were crowded around tables, slamming mahjong tiles.
Zelda aggressively scanned the room, but Brody was nowhere to be found.
A few of the thugs noticed her, their lips curling into sleazy, predatory smiles as they began to whistle.
"Well hello there, gorgeous. What's a lady like you doing in a place like this all by yourself?"
