"Boss, she's here," Q announced.
Brody's gruff voice echoed through the wood. "Bring her in."
Q pushed the door open, stepped aside to let Zelda pass, and then pulled it firmly shut behind her.
Brody was slouched at a private mahjong table. He barely glanced up as she entered, his tone utterly indifferent.
"You made it. Take a seat."
Zelda was already boiling with rage, and she didn't even bother sitting down before unloading on him.
"Brody, those goons of yours downstairs are completely out of control."
Brody calmly flicked his cigarette ash into a tray, completely ignoring her outburst.
Her anger flared higher. "Downstairs, they were saying the most disgusting, inappropriate things to me! I dropped your name, and you know what they said? They said a man like you wouldn't be caught dead with a washed-up woman like me!"
She paused, fully expecting Brody to leap to her defense and coddle her the way he usually did.
But this time, Brody simply took another drag of his cigarette, his voice devoid of any warmth.
"They're just dumb grunts. Why the hell are you letting them get under your skin?"
Zelda froze, a sudden wave of unease washing over her.
The man who was usually so deeply attentive in bed was now looking at her with total apathy. It felt as if, having used her, he was ready to discard her.
But she hadn't come here to pick a fight about his attitude. She needed answers.
Forcing down her irritation, she softened her voice into a desperate plea.
"Brody, what's been going on with you the past few days? Your phone was off, you wouldn't text back... do you have any idea how worried I was?"
Brody scoffed inwardly.
*Worried?*
Was she worried about his safety, or terrified that her hit job had blown up in her face?
It was glaringly obvious she was just scared he'd get caught and drag her down with him.
But Brody didn't care enough to call out her bluff. He just gave a deadpan excuse.
"Phone broke. Had it in the shop."
Zelda immediately knew it was a lie.
But since he had drawn that line in the sand, she wasn't foolish enough to push it.
