That evening, Lucian picked Seraphina up.
The sleek car glided down the quiet, tree-lined avenue leading to Langford Manor.
Before the car even came to a complete stop at the entrance, Seraphina spotted Eleanor Langford standing at the top of the grand steps, eagerly looking out for them.
As soon as the car parked, Seraphina pushed the door open and hurried up the steps. "Grandma Eleanor, it is freezing out here. Why did you come outside?"
Eleanor grabbed her hands, fussing over her and looking her up and down. "I watched the livestream today. Seeing you standing up there all alone, surrounded by all those vultures... it broke my heart."
"I do not know what Lucian was thinking, letting you handle that by yourself."
The old lady shot a withering glare at Lucian, who had just walked up behind them.
Lucian wisely kept his mouth shut.
Seraphina laughed, jumping to his defense. "Grandma Eleanor, I was the one who told him not to come. It was a minor issue. I could handle it myself."
Eleanor patted her hand affectionately, her eyes full of warmth. "You sweet girl, always taking the weight of the world on your shoulders. Come on, let us go inside before you catch a cold."
The three of them headed indoors, where the central heating wrapped around them like a warm blanket.
Two figures were already seated on the plush living room sofas: Lucian's uncle, Lawrence, and his wife, Charlene.
Seeing Seraphina walk in, Charlene set down the orange she was peeling, wiped her hands, and plastered on a smile. "Oh, Seraphina is back."
"You certainly stole the spotlight today. I watched the whole thing at home. I was so nervous I barely blinked."
Catching the thinly veiled sarcasm in her voice, Seraphina replied evenly, "You flatter me, Charlene."
Charlene let out a short laugh, quickly shifting her tone. "Now, do not take this the wrong way, Seraphina. You know I speak my mind."
"But you are the lady of the Langford family now, and you are carrying an heir. How could you just march up on a stage and get into a public shouting match? What if someone bumped into you? Who would take responsibility for that?"
She paused, and when Seraphina offered no reaction, she pressed on. "Besides, everyone knows the Langfords' status in this city. As Lucian's wife, making a spectacle of yourself and fighting with people in public... it is just not a good look."
