"Did you want to attend a wedding banquet, Charlene?" His voice was cool and entirely unbothered. "We'll host a grand celebration for the baby's one-month milestone. You can attend that."
Charlene's face paled slightly.
That wasn't what she meant at all.
Was Lucian playing dumb, or was he intentionally shutting her down?
Lawrence chuckled, setting his teacup down and assuming the patronizing air of an elder.
"Lucian, that's not what Charlene meant. She just feels that for something as monumental as your marriage, the family barely got to be involved. She feels bad for you. You're the eldest grandson of the Langford family, after all. Your wedding should have been a glamorous spectacle. Doing it like this... it doesn't exactly sound great to outsiders."
The words sounded as though he was looking out for Lucian, but the underlying malice was undeniable.
What did he mean by 'it doesn't sound great'?
He was blatantly implying that Seraphina's entrance into the family was unseemly and that Lucian had been forced into marrying her.
No one in that room was a fool. It was impossible to miss the insult.
Grandma Eleanor's expression darkened completely.
She had lived a long time; she knew exactly how to read between the lines.
Noticing the matriarch's furious expression, Lawrence wisely snapped his mouth shut.
He was still deeply terrified of his mother.
Oblivious to the shifting mood, Charlene kept smiling. "Seraphina's belly is getting quite large. When exactly is the due date? You absolutely must hire a top-tier maternity nurse when the time comes. You can't take any risks with your first child."
Seraphina gave a polite response. "The end of next month."
"The end of next month?" Charlene did the mental math, the vicious smile on her face widening. "Well then... it seems you were pregnant before the wedding even happened?"
The question was incredibly crude, but its intention was crystal clear.
—She had trapped him with a pregnancy, and Lucian had been forced into a shotgun wedding.
The room fell dead silent.
The butler standing by the door looked trapped, desperately wishing he could suddenly go deaf.
