"Go to sleep," he murmured softly, resting his chin on the top of her head.
Seraphina closed her eyes, but sleep wouldn't come.
Looking back, this was the third time something like this had happened this week alone.
Three days ago in the early hours of the morning, she had gotten up to use the restroom and heard a noise in the study. When she opened the door, Lucian was just hanging up the phone. He had claimed he was dealing with the time zone difference for a client in the States.
Then there was the night before last. She had stepped out of the shower to find him standing by the window on a call. The second she approached, he had hit end, blaming a poor signal.
And now, tonight.
Every single time, he had a perfectly rational explanation.
But it was precisely because there were no flaws in his excuses that she felt something was wrong.
Little Bean rolled over in his crib and spoke into her mind: *Mommy, are you still awake?*
Seraphina didn't respond.
After a brief pause, Little Bean added: *I just tried to sense Daddy's emotions. I don't think he was lying. But he is definitely hiding something on purpose.*
Seraphina's eyes snapped open.
*It's nothing bad,* Little Bean clarified, *but he doesn't want you to know.*
If it wasn't a bad thing, why keep it a secret?
If it were strictly business, Lucian never kept her in the dark. He had even discussed the Paradox Logic acquisition strategy with her.
So what on earth required him to be on the phone at two or three in the morning, using such a gentle, soothing tone?
Staring toward Little Bean's crib in the dark, Seraphina listened to the steady, rhythmic breathing of the man beside her. He seemed to be fast asleep.
She suddenly felt that this man—the one pressing warmly against her back—was carrying secrets.
At seven the next morning, Lucian's alarm went off right on time.
He got out of bed, washed up, and got dressed, entirely identical to his usual routine.
Sitting at the dining table nursing Little Bean, Seraphina watched him out of the corner of her eye.
