Seraphina's mouth twitched slightly. It was precisely because of how Tiffany handled things that she didn't trust her.
Tiffany reached over and placed her hand on top of Seraphina's, patting it gently.
"Don't worry."
She was terrified her best friend would overthink things and spiral into depression.
Quickly changing the subject, Tiffany said, "Who knows, maybe it really is a surprise."
Seraphina nodded.
She suddenly recalled how Lucian had lingered by the door that morning, looking at her just a moment longer than usual.
Her heart softened.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
It was a text from Lucian.
"Just finished meeting with a client. I picked up those Honeyed Almond Petit Fours you said you were craving. Wait for me tonight."
Seraphina stared at the screen for a long time.
This man—one moment he was so impossibly sweet and thoughtful that she couldn't find a single flaw, and the next, he was hiding secrets just out of her reach.
After a while, she replied, "Okay."
...
When Lucian returned that evening, he really did bring the Honeyed Almond Petit Fours she loved.
They sat together for dinner, chatting just as they always did. It felt like any other normal night.
Seraphina kept a close eye on him but couldn't detect the slightest hint of guilt.
She placed a piece of fish into his bowl and asked with feigned casualness, "What were you busy with this afternoon?"
Lucian's chopsticks paused for just a fraction of a second.
"Had a meeting, and then took care of some personal matters."
Personal matters.
Seraphina swallowed the words down along with a mouthful of rice.
Before bed, he wrapped his arms tightly around her from behind, resting his chin on the top of her head. His voice sounded somewhat muffled.
"Sera, no matter what happens, you have to trust me."
Seraphina's heart skipped a beat.
"Why are you suddenly saying that?"
He remained silent for a long moment, pulling her closer against him.
"No reason."
