Seraphina picked up her knife and fork, elegantly slicing off a small piece of foie gras.
Not far away, the melody of the piano suddenly missed a beat.
It was a tiny error, almost imperceptible to most.
But Seraphina caught it.
She lifted her gaze, glancing over at the grand piano in the corner.
The performer playing the piece was a young woman wearing a flowing, moon-white dress. Her long hair cascaded down her back, and her side profile looked strikingly familiar.
Right at that moment, the girl looked up, her gaze locking onto their table.
Their eyes met.
The girl's fingers paused over the keys for a fleeting second.
Seraphina calmly withdrew her gaze.
Observing her expression, Lucian asked, "Someone you know?"
"She looks familiar," Seraphina replied, dabbing the corners of her mouth with her napkin. "But she's too far away to see clearly."
She paused. "Though realistically, she's supposed to be studying abroad in Country Y right now."
Lucian murmured in acknowledgment but didn't press the issue.
He picked up the decanter of aerated red wine and poured a small amount into her glass. "Eat first. Everything looks blurry on an empty stomach."
Seraphina accepted the glass and took a small sip.
Watching her, Lucian's Adam's apple bobbed.
"Why did you suddenly bring me to a place like this?" Seraphina set the glass down, finally asking the first real question of the night.
Lucian's movements stilled for an almost undetectable moment.
"Do you not like it?" He looked up.
Christian had promised him that ninety-nine percent of women loved places like this.
Had he somehow managed to hit the one percent who didn't?
Seraphina shook her head. "It's not that I don't like it."
"It's just a bit too grand."
Lucian's frown smoothed out slightly. "It's not too grand."
He slid a plate of perfectly pre-cut steak in front of her. "You deserve it."
Seraphina stared at the immaculately plated steak but said nothing.
