My mother’s sudden switch to the mind link made me realize whatever I had asked her wasn’t something that was to be discussed out loud.

She firmly held onto my arm so we could sit next to each other, glancing around as she tightened her grip.

“Where did you hear that? Tell me!” While asking me a second time, there was an urgency in her voice that came as a surprise, once again taking me a moment to respond.

She looked into my eyes and barely blinked, her heart now racing. It was something that had only happened after my question. Was it that much of a shock to her?

The last thing I wanted was to let it be known that there was actually a werewolf with mystical powers, at least for that moment. It was for this reason that even to my own mother, I kept my composure to not give it away that I wasn’t being honest.

“I just read about it in a book recently,” I said using the mind link, keeping myself calm so I wouldn’t panic.

Her wide eyes narrowed as she firmly shook her head. “You must be mistaken. Such information doesn’t exist in textbooks. Did you seriously read about that type of werewolf in one?”

“Yes, that’s what I just said.”

She rubbed her temples, seemingly not believing a word of what I had just said to her.

“And what’s the name of the book?” she asked.

I forced a chuckle. “Come on. Are we really doing this r-”

“Answer me!” She tightened her grip even more on my arm with a pang of desperation.

At that moment, it was obvious to me that she wanted to get her hands on the book, but why?

With my other hand, I rubbed the back of my neck as I said, “I don’t remember the name of the book.”

She sighed with a flicker of annoyance. “And I’m just supposed to believe that?”

“But that’s the truth. Don’t forget how much I love to read. I’ve read so many books in my life that I barely remember half of them.”

“Even if that’s true, you wouldn’t forget something that you recently read about. Now, tell me the name of the book.”

“I really don’t remember.” I shrugged.

She pulled her hand away from my wrist, closing her eyes as she crossed her arms.

“Alright since you want to be that way. Where did you read that book?” Her eyes shot open again.

I clenched my fist behind my back, struggling to come up with an answer right away.

“I….I don’t remember that either,” I said.

She sighed. “Stop messing around and just tell me where you read it.”

In the kingdom, there was an account for every book to have ever been written and my mother was part of the council that reviewed each one and made the final decision to have it approved. I knew that if I would mention any library, she’d know right away that I was lying. I needed to think quickly and it only took me a few seconds to come up with something. I even smiled at her as I began to speak.

“Mom, I don’t know why you keep referring to it as a textbook. I never said that. I just read it in someone’s notebook. I only saw him once and that was during the days Tyler and I were handing out flyers for the Warrior Selection Competition. It happened when I bumped into him and his notebook fell and opened to that page. After that, I never saw him again.”

She sighed with defeat, scrunching up the bottom of her dress as she balled her hand into a fist and rose to her feet with a low growl. I hadn’t seen her that way in such a long time.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, still trying my best to stay calm as I stood right behind her.

She looked at the sky, her growls fading. “How could someone have that top secret information and just be roaming around with it?”

“Top secret?” I raised my eyebrows.

She sighed and let go of her dress, taking a seat again and patting the spot next to her so I could sit beside her again.

“There are many who believe that werewolves with mystical powers are only some made up stories, but they actually exist. It’s mainly because they’re quite rare. They’re so sought-after that it never ends well when their abilities are known to everyone.”

“Why?”

“First, tell me everything you saw on that page.”

“To be honest, it was just a glimpse and-”

“It doesn’t matter. Just tell me.”

“I saw something like such werewolves can manipulate air, water, earth and fire and it’s only possible thanks to the wolf that’s part of them.”

She looked away from me, rising to her feet again and pacing with her hands brought together,

“Who else knows about this?” she asked.

“Tyler, but we only joked about it.”

That seemed to put her at ease as her pacing came to a stop and she turned to face me again.

“I see. What you saw was true, but such a werewolf hasn’t been heard of in centuries.”

“Would it be possible for one to show up today?”

“The possibility is quite low, but it could happen. It’s also only in families where there has been a known werewolf with such power before. It can be passed on at any point, no matter how long it takes. However, if such a werewolf existed today, it could prove to be dangerous.”

“Why?”

“I first need to mention that these kinds of werewolves only grow stronger depending on when they were born. The more recent, the more powerful. Now, if one existed today, there are a few possibilities. One is that whoever wields such power would be hunted down so they’d be stripped of their wolf. That’s because there would be so many looking to claim that power as their own.”

I firmly shook my head. “That’s impossible. Doing that would mean extracting someone’s wolf. No one can do such a thing as that’s always part of who we are.”

“You’re not wrong, but werewolves with mystical powers are different. It’s possible for this to happen in case the need arises. That brings me to the second possibility. If one who posseses such power has a will driven by greed, they’d come for this kingdom.”

My heart skipped a beat at the thought of Addison doing something like that. Was that the real reason she desperately needed my help?

From what she had told me, Saga had to be sealed away since she was that powerful. I couldn’t imagine her at her full potential after what had happened with the twig.

Part of me even wanted to meet up with her and this time, turn her down myself without Koa saying anything, but there was another part of me that held onto the belief that Addison was far from greedy.

“There has to be another possibility, right?” I asked, holding my breath.

She sighed, nodding. “There’s definitely a third, but through the ages, it’s rarely been spoken about.”

Though it already wasn’t looking good, my mother changed my way of thinking about it when she chuckled.

“The third possibility is becoming such a werewolf’s mate. There have been werewolves striving for that in the

past but in most cases, it didn’t work as the mystical werewolves still wanted that power for themselves. The last time I heard of such a thing, the moon goddess decided that when the next one appeared, he or she would need a mate to strike a balance and that’s only if guided on taking the right path.”

My mother’s words got me thinking about Addison again. Saga was only sealed away after Jess got hurt.

Had that never happened, she’d be stronger compared to a few years ago but extremely dangerous. Having a mate to strike a balance? Was that why coming in physical contact with her awakened something in her? I felt it, too. Could it be that I had been singled out for this task from the moment I was born?

Just as my mind raced with several questions, my mother said, “Since we’re still on the topic, there’s

something worth mentioning. Werewolves with mystical powers aren’t bound by the fated mates rule. They can choose to be alone, or choose whoever they want and no one can stop them?

Her words led to panic, but it wasn’t me. It was Koa. I knew exactly what was going on with him, but I couldn’t burst out laughing right at that moment.

“I didn’t think my curiosity would lead to so much valuable information. Thanks for explaining it all to me? I

said to her.

She gently placed her hand on top of mine. “Anytime, my son.”

She held onto my arm with both hands, resting her head on my shoulder.

“While I never imagined that this would be the subject, it was lovely chatting with you about a topic that you should never mention to your father.”

“Of course.”

“Don’t forget that unlike the rest of us, he’s the only one who can read our minds, but be sure to seal this information away so it’s never exposed.”

“While I appreciate the advice, I thought you’d actually want him to know about this.”

“Knowing your father, he’d immediately strive to eliminate such a threat to his kingdom, but there’s no need for that. It’s not like such a werewolf has actually appeared.”

The thought of what would actually happen to Addison only hit me at that moment. I needed to be careful with everything I knew.

While that was my main focus, I could still sense Koa’s panic, giving me some amusement.

“Are you ready for dinner with Jeffrey’s family?” my mother said out loud, smiling as she looked up at me.

Though she changed the subject, I just couldn’t wait to get away from her so I could speak to Koa. Doing it right there would only prove to be disrespectful as I wouldn’t have paid attention to my mother.

“I’m ready, but to be honest, I just don’t understand why my father has done something like this. He only ever dines with those members within a family who hold a top rank within his kingdom. This is strange.”

She chuckled. “He can be really unpredictable at times. Just look at what happened to Murphy. Up to now, I’m certain that he also doesn’t believe that he’s still alive.”

I chuckled softly. “That’s one of the most shocking things I’ve seen my entire life.”

She sat upright and rose to her feet, fixing her royal gown as she said, “Your father needs me now. I’ll be inside.”

I nodded, watching her until she was out of sight.

Now alone, I leaned forward and brought my hands together, finally able to focus on Koa in my mind and talk

to him.

“You really messed up when you turned down Addison and belittled her.”

“Shut up.”

“You went on and on about how she needed to beg because we’re royalty, but actually helping her means she gets to stay on the right track. Even without reaching her full potential yet, she’s the most recent werewolf of her kind and that makes her the strongest compared to the previous ones. If things ever go wrong and she turns greedy with that power, there’ll be nothing for us here.”

“No! That’s not happening. She’s-she’s not mad at me, right? Right?”

“That’s something to find out next time. You better apologize.”
