No matter how I thought about it, I couldn’t see myself begging Koa for his help. I truly believed that Max wanted to help, but Koa was in the way. His arrogant nature just wanted to see me fall at his feet.

There had to be another way, but until I would speak to Lyra, I wasn’t going to know for sure. It had been difficult to get a hold of her.

I couldn’t even peacefully be with my thoughts, as Phoebe and Sally kept swooning over Ruby’s gorgeous ball gown dress.

She could have easily gotten ready from home but had specifically requested that everything be brought to her. It was only so I could see it all and she could rub it in my face.

“Hey, Addison, this is how you’re supposed to dress when dining with royalty. But what would you know about that since you’ve never had the opportunity?”

I rolled my eyes as I looked at her. “You know what’s more surprising than anything else right now?”

“What?” She sneered.

“It’s the fact that you’re still here.”

“How can I leave when you haven’t taken a good look at me? Anyway, this is only my first outfit for the evening.”

Phoebe gasped. “Only the first? You really have a second one?”

“Of course and it’s just as gorgeous. Tonight, I’ll be sleeping at the palace.”

“Oh, wow!” Sally gave little claps filled with excitement. “You’re so lucky!”

“And not just anyone can sleep at the palace. What makes it even better…” She trailed off as she looked at me. “Is that it might be on the same floor as Max and Tyler.”

While I planned not to say anything to her, I was actually a little jealous. And why had Max not said anything about it yet?

I faced the other side to ignore her, reminding myself that he owed me no explanation. Whatever.

Max

Tyler and I stood next to each other as our parents were a few feet away from us, waiting to welcome Jeffrey and his family.

They had prepared for this dinner so much that it felt like it was royalty coming to visit, yet it was just

someone who worked for us.

We both still couldn’t figure out why my father had gone to such lengths. Not once had he ever done something like this before. It was for this reason that Tyler and I still felt that there was more to it. There was no way in the world he just wanted to impress the Hawkins. Unfortunately, neither of us could read his mind, which meant we had to wait and see what was about to unfold.

“Hey,” Tyler said to me using the mind link. “Are you excited to dine with Ruby?”

“I’m just as excited as you are,” I replied.

“I’ve got some news for you, big brother. I’m not excited at all.”

“You’re so slow sometimes. Why do you think I just told you that?”

He rolled his eyes and I could tell he just wanted to hit my shoulder, but he had to restrain himself. We were surrounded by our royal guards and dressed in the finest royal attire. We had to carry ourselves a certain way.

From a distance, we picked up the familiar scents and it would still take a while before they would come into view, but I already dreaded the thought of having to dine with Ruby. I didn’t mind her parents.

In my mind, Koa just wouldn’t shut up, still asking me to plead on his behalf to make peace with Addison, but it was the same thing all over again. I was going to do no such thing. It had to be him after the way he had disrespected her. It was clear to me he wanted a taste of that power more than anything else. And for someone as arrogant and powerful as he was, he couldn’t imagine another wolf benefiting from it.

It was only when the royal guards announced the Hawkins’ arrival that I paid attention again, looking on as they all made their way to the palace entrance.

While her parents were at ease, Ruby just couldn’t hide her excitement and she kept flipping her hair.

“Ugh!” Tyler said to me. “Just look at her.” His tone was filled with great disapproval.

They then got to a point where they had to pass by the royal guards standing on both sides. That was the same treatment most of the respected guests would receive as it showed that they were held in such a high regard.

Ruby even held onto the sides of her ball gown dress, her head high with her lips pursed.

Finally, they got to my parents, my father being his usual intimidating self while sharing a few words of warm welcome. The two didn’t really match well together, but everyone was used to that by now.

It was my mother’s genuine warmth that everyone focused on.

Ruby couldn’t stop glancing at us. She even waved, making her mother a little embarrassed as she shook her head. She was in the palace and had to carry herself a certain way.

It even seemed that my father was about to say something about it as he looked at her with disapproval. Tyler and I waited for that moment, but instead, he only gestured for the two of us to get closer to them. We wondered what was going on with him. Something wasn’t right.

Jeffrey’s family paid their respects to Tyler and I, bowing their heads as they spoke in unison. While the rest of them spoke calmly, it was Ruby’s suddenly high-pitched voice that stood out from them. Was she that excited? Tyler and I couldn’t help but be embarrassed on her family’s behalf.

My father then invited them inside, right away engaging in conversation with Jeffrey while my mother spoke

to his wife.

Tyler and I were way behind them and Ruby looked back at us, stopped in her tracks and moved backwards so we could catch up to her.

“It’s so good to see you guys!” she giggled.

“Of course it is,” Tyler and I said in unison, our voices void of any enthusiasm.

After what Ruby did with Murphy, how could we possibly want anything to do with her? It still didn’t make sense that even my father wanted her in the palace.

My brother and I were in no rush to catch up to our parents and the Hawkins, so we stopped in our tracks and sat by the bench, both of us communicating using the mind link as she just stood there clueless.

“As much as I hate to say this,” he began. “I still prefer Addison to Ruby right now and that says a lot.”

“I’m not surprised,” I replied.

“Guys,” Ruby said, snapping her fingers to grab our attention and after we looked at her, she poked out her hip as she said, “Why didn’t you ever say anything to me back at Blackbolt High about who you really were? Come on. We’re on the same team here.”

I glanced at Tyler, gesturing to him with a nod to be the one to respond.

“Look, Ruby, understand this – we might be on the same team, but you still work for us.”

He said it with such a hostile tone and a straight face that I fought hard to hold in my laughter.

“Oh,” she said, looking to the side as her enthusiasm faded a little. “I guess that’s why you still couldn’t say anything, but that shouldn’t matter because we’re still loyal to you. Anyway, how about you guys show me around?”

Having had enough of her, I said, “We have servants for that. Ask them. Let’s go, Tyler.”

“Wha-?” She was at a loss for words, looking on as Tyler and I rose to our feet, our royal guards following right behind us.

It still didn’t take long for her to catch up as she quickly made her way through them to be at the same pace as my brother and I.

While she didn’t say anything this time, her breath was heavy with a racing heart. It was clear that our conduct upset her. This was definitely not what she was expecting.

We finally made it to the dining table where everyone was already in their seats.

My brother and I took our custom designed seats while Ruby sat right next to me, her parents on the other. side and across from us.

It was clear that she just wouldn’t give up and would do whatever it took to get closer to my brother and I.

While our parents continued to engage in conversation as we waited for the food, she still tried her best to talk to Tyler and I because she knew that this time, there was no way we would ignore her the way we did outside.

“What do you think of my dress?” She smiled mockingly.

“It’s gorgeous,” Tyler said, faking a smile.

“Just as gorgeous as me, right, Max?” She flipped her hair again.

“Of course.” I forced a chuckle, clenching my fist under the table.

My father, who was still talking to Ruby’s parents, then looked around the table as he spoke a little louder so we could all pay attention to him.

“The Warrior Selection Competition has been great so far, the most impressive being Addison’s match against Drina.”

His words came as a shock to Tyler and I as that was the last thing we expected to hear from him at a moment like that. It was also rare for him to just give out compliments.

Ruby cleared her throat and I glanced at her, observing how bitter she got at my father’s comment about Addison’s match.

“I agree, Jeffrey replied, I didn’t expect it to turn out the way it did. Drina has been practicing a lot thanks to her uncle and that says a lot about how she was defeated in the end.”

“It was actually embarrassing,” my father said, “but overall, still a great match and the best so far. Ruby, I watched your match, too.”

Her bitterness instantly faded as she chuckled loudly, bowing to her Lycan King.

“Thank

you, Your Majesty,” she said. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“I only said I watched it. I didn’t say I enjoyed it,” he corrected her.

“My apologies.” She bowed once again, her smile fading.

“You can’t possibly compare the thrill of watching a real fight to climbing a wall,” he said as he continued to

look around the table.

He went on to criticize Ruby’s match further and it was clear that her parents were uncomfortable.

It was only when dinner was being served that he gave it a rest and there was a moment of silence around the table. It seemed that no one wanted to speak anymore as my father had done it for a long time with nothing positive to say.

Once everything was on the table and it was expected that we would begin to feast, he said, “Before we begin I’d like to find out something. Ruby, how has life been for you in the past few weeks?”

His unexpected question left everyone confused as we all looked at each other, wondering what he was talking

about.

“Uh…it’s been great,” she faked a smile, her eyes narrowed with confusion.

“Just great?”

“Uhm…that’s right, Your Majesty.”

“That means you’ve just been having a blast, not even the slightest change to your perfect life?”

“That’s correct.” She chuckled nervously, still confused like the rest of us.

He sighed, leaning back in his seat. “I see. Jeffrey, am I right to believe that you did nothing about your daughter and Murphy working together?”

Jeffrey scrambled to his feet, bowing his head just as he was about to speak. “I haven’t yet had the time, but I assure you that I-”

“Silence!” His tone was a little harsh. “There’s no need for you to stand up. Take your seat. We’re all here today so I can take care of this myself.”

It was then that Tyler and I realized what was really going on. My father was about to punish Ruby himself.
