Chapter 36
Max
My father’s announcement only brought nothing but tension all around the table. Even my mother wasn’t at ease. None of us knew exactly how he was going to handle this.
“Jeffrey,” he said.
“Yes, Alpha Warrick?”
“I still don’t understand why you’re on your feet when I told you to have a seat. The same goes for your wife.”
They both glanced at each other, their hearts pounding in their chests as they once again took their seats. They couldn’t stop staring at Ruby, who now had sweat dripping down her forehead.
Without inviting anyone else to join him, my father began to eat, taking his time with the meat and not looking up at anyone as he continued to speak.
“I must say, I’m quite disappointed, Jeffrey. I expected you to do as you promised, but it looks like you didn’t. There are so many ways you could have handled this. It still works in my favour because here we are.”
“I was planning to-”
“Silence,” my father’s voice was low but threatening, his eyes now glowing a bright red.
Despite how nervous we all were, Ruby’s breathing was louder than anyone else’s. It was obvious she was terrified. She glanced at the door a few times, already making it obvious that she wanted to run.
With the guards in the way, she attempted to dash past them but even before she got to them, she was stopped when my father, who was faster, blocked the way, wrapping his hand around her neck.
Her parents rushed to her aid but couldn’t even get too close as my father roared to keep them in place. They stopped in their tracks, but the fear was written all over their faces.
It didn’t even seem that he added any pressure around Ruby’s neck, yet she was already in tears.
“I don’t remember giving you permission to leave,” he said, looking down at her with his eyes still glowing.
Then, he let her go with a gentle push to a corner, her parents sighing with relief just as she did while she touched her neck a few times.
“Return to your seats,” he said, putting his glowing eyes away.
Just as her mother seemed to speak to her using their mind link and she attempted to return to the table, my father spoke again.
“Everyone except Ruby. Stay right where you are.”
Putting her hands together, Mrs Hawkins said, “Alpha War-”
“You only speak when I allow it. Now, let’s eat.
His nonchalance as he said it only added to the tension, but he obviously meant it as he looked around the table. We knew what was expected of us and so, Tyler and I went first, digging into the food and our mother followed suit.
It took the Hawkins a while to join in as they could only think about Ruby, but my father’s glares were so deadly that they finally joined the rest of us. While everything was delicious, they didn’t seem to enjoy any of it as their hands trembled.

Chapter 36
“I should have done this a while ago, but better late than never,” my father said. “There’s one more person who should be joining us this evening.”
I glanced at Tyler and my mother before glancing at the Hawkins, everyone seemingly just as confused as I was. Who was he talking about?
It took a few minutes before I could even figure it out, but I finally picked up a familiar scent getting stronger and there he was a few minutes later, walking in with his head low and shoulders curved inward with fear.
“Welcome, Murphy,” my father said. “Glad you could join us.”
It was a surprise to see him. We knew that he had been spared but didn’t think we’d be seeing him again.
His clothes were anything but presentable for dinner. They were ripped and stained, almost like he had been that way for a few days.
He looked around the room, then froze the moment he saw Ruby.
“Thank you for having me, Alpha Warrick,” he said with an obvious tremble in his voice. “I’m so glad to be part of this dinner.”
“Everything about you says otherwise. Everyone can tell, but anyway, stand over there with Ruby.”
Slowly, he made his way to her, and my father growled when he hit the table with a fist.
“Faster!”
Murphy flinched like the rest of us, quickening his pace until he was right in the same corner.
Ruby twisted her face in disgust as she glared at him, then faced the floor.
“Everyone present at this table should know this. I don’t take lightly to anyone who acts out of line. And usually, it never ends well for them. When this was first brought to me, by you, Jeffrey, I was really going to kill Murphy but what fairness was there in that? He wasn’t the only one at fault. Ruby had an equal part to play in this and is just as guilty. She deserves the same punishment he receives.”
Jeffrey and his wife scrambled to their feet again, bringing their hands together, their breaths heavy.
“Please, we beg you to spare our daughter!” Mrs Hawkins cried out.
“I would have taken that into consideration, if only she was a bit remorseful, but just look at her, standing there without saying a word. She obviously believes she doesn’t deserve to be punished.”/
Her parents turned to face her without saying anything out loud. It was only then that she dropped to her knees, leaned forward and rested her forehead right on the floor.
“Your Majesty, I’m sorry!” she cried out.
“Are you?”
“Yes, I really am!”
“Don’t forget who you’re talking to right now. I see right through your lies and they make me want to worsen the punishment you’re about to receive.”
Raising her head, she said, “I just-”
“I don’t remember saying you could raise your head. Put it right back where it was.”

Chapter 36
She faced the floor again, resting her forehead right on it.
“For now, let’s eat and Murphy, get on your knees..
His instructions were clear and were to be followed no matter what.
Everyone began to cat again, including the Hawkins, but they obviously weren’t at peace as they kept looking at their daughter.
My father even changed the subject, talking about the warriors with a casual tone. It was all with the intention to ignore Ruby and Murphy on the floor. And everyone took part in the conversation, just so we wouldn’t escalate the tension. It was the hardest for Ruby’s parents, who kept wiping the sweat from their foreheads while forcing themselves to smile.
The meal took a while, but when it finally came to an end and the table was still filled with fake laughter, he suddenly slammed the surface and turned serious, everyone going silent.
He rose to his feet and slowly made his way to Murphy and Ruby, the Hawkins’ hearts beating faster than ever before.
“Ruby Hawkins.”
“Y-yes, Your Majesty?”
“I could rip your head off right here.”
“Please don’t-”
He growled, silencing her.
“As I was saying before I was interrupted, I could rip your head off right here, but I’ve chosen not to kill you.”
There was instant relief at the table, the Hawkins placing their hands on their chests as they leaned back in their seats to wipe the sweat off their foreheads.
“Thank you so much, Your Majesty!” Ruby burst into tears. She was obviously terrified.
“However, you’re still going to be punished.”
“As long as you spare my life, I’ll gladly accept any punishment!”
She had never been so terrified before but she was speaking to the Alpha, the Lycan King.
“For your punishment, you’re going to Withdraw from the Warrior Selection Competition.”
“What?” she said at the same time as her parents in shock.
“You heard me the first time and I won’t repeat that part. It is those like you who don’t deserve to be in such a prestigious competition showcasing the best. How could you be out there striving for something better when you’re nothing but a liar and ready to do anything just to have your way? I could banish you from this Kingdom but I’ve chosen not to because of who Jeffrey is to me and how he has served me well.”
“But-but… This isn’t fair!” she protested, looking up at him.
He leaned over, his eyes glowing as he said, “Would you rather I broke every bone in your body before ripping you in half?”
She held her breath, looking away from his glowing eyes. “Of-of course not.”
“Then it’s settled. With immediate effect, you’re no longer part of the competition even if you qualified to the next round. Murphy, I have something different in mind for you. We’ll discuss it later. For now, return to where you’re being kept. I have some business to attend to. We’re done here.”

Chapter 36
He gestured to my mother with his hand, making her get up right away and walk right beside him as they made their wa
out.
As soon as they were far enough, Jeffrey and his wife rushed to Ruby, who was still on the floor with her forehead on it.
Her mother placed her hand on her shoulder and she grunted in frustration as she pushed her hand away.
“Fuck!” Ruby whispered aggressively, her eyes glowing.
“Watch your language, young lady. We’re at the palace!” her mother reminded her.
“I don’t give a shit where we are! This is-”
Her mother covered her mouth, the expression in her eyes making it obvious that she was now talking to her with the mind link.
While Tyler and I couldn’t understand what exactly they were saying, Ruby seemed not to want to listen to whatever advice was given to her, which was why she pushed her mother’s hand away and stormed off, holding onto the sides of her dress.
They immediately went after her, Tyler and I glancing at each other then going after them as well.
As soon as we were outside, we spotted them heading to the gates, rushing after Ruby and right at that moment, she shifted so she could get away much faster. It was the first time I saw her in that form, her wolf a dark brown with three white stripes on the areas just below her ears.
Seeing that, her parents also shifted and went after her.
She was still young and inexperienced compared to them in their wolf form. It was only a matter of time before they caught up to her.
Escorted by the royal guards, Murphy walked past us, keeping his head low without saying a word as he bowed to us.
Now left alone with Tyler, I finally looked over at him and he chuckled.
“I don’t see how this is going to end well,” he said.
“You are definitely right about that.” I nodded. “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something.”
“What is it?”
Switching to the mind link, I said, “I prefer if we talked about it like this. It’s the only way that no one else will hear us. Don’t forget that we’re surrounded by guards.”
“Hmm, this must be interesting as you still seem so alert while using this method.”
“I was just making sure our father wasn’t around.”
“Come on. You and I both know he’s not here. We could’ve picked up his scent had that been the case. He left with our
mother.”
“I know but I just wanted to be sure. Anyway, I spoke to our mother and asked her about the existence of werewolves with mystical powers.”
“What? Are you out of your mind? Wouldn’t that just raise more suspicion that you actually know something?”
“Relax. I perfectly handled that part by saying that I read it in someone’s notebook that I never saw again.”
“I have to admit that I’m impressed. I don’t think I would have been able to come up with such a lie in a few seconds.”

Chapter 36
“And that’s what sets us apart. You won’t believe what she told me.”
“Well? Let’s hear it.”
As I explained it all to him, there were a few moments when his reaction almost gave it away to the guards that we were talking about something so sensitive. It was that shocking to him to learn all about it as well.
“Now I wonder just how special you are,” he said.
Tve been asking myself the same question. Now I even wonder if I’ll ever experience the moment of finding your mate the way others usually do. That spark with Addison, I’ve never felt that with anyone else. Maybe on the day that I touched her for the first time, that was it for me.”
“There’s so much to process right now, but I can just imagine Koa apologizing to her.”
“He’s obviously not looking forward to it, but he knows he has to do it. We need to keep her on track and she really needs me to unlock her full potential.”
“I don’t know about this, brother. Do you actually think that’s a good idea after everything you know about what she could become?”
