Chapter 37
Chapter 37
Addison
It was late in the morning and I should’ve been sitting up, stretching myself after having a good night’s sleep, but it was the complete opposite. Phoebe and Sally had been whispering to each other with giggles several times throughout the night and I could clearly hear them. They spoke about Ruby at the palace like it was nothing. I thought that as the morning came. I’d finally catch a break from hearing about the topic, but they were far from done with it.
I was facing the wall while on my bed, still listening to them..
“Gosh!” Sally whispered excitedly. “I just can’t wait for Ruby to come back and tell us all about it. I wonder how the dinner
went.”
“There’s only one word to describe it – amazing!” Phoebe clapped a few times, then sighed to compose herself. “She’s probably having the time of her life.”
Irritated. I bit my lip and squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out their conversation, but I knew it was all for nothing since I could hear them.
As Phoebe and Sally’s conversation intensified, their soft whispers became louder and my patience only ran thinner. I could feel my blood starting to boil, which affected Saga.
“Omg! I just had the craziest thought!” Phoebe whispered.
“Tell me!”
“What if last night, Ruby went to sleep and Tyler went to her bedroom?”
“Hmm, it would be more exciting if it was Max instead.”
That was the last straw for me. With a growl that sounded more like a roar, I rolled out of my bed and landed on my feet, narrowing my eyes at the two of them as I spoke.
“Can you two just stop? I’ve been trying to get some proper sleep all night but it’s not happening because of you. And why even bother whispering when I can still clearly hear you?”
My sudden outburst caused the two of them to jump in surprise. Their eyes widened as they turned to each other, as if both asking that what they were seeing was real.
As they looked back at me, their facial expressions turned apologetic.
“Oh…” Phoebe said, her voice trailing off.
The silence only made my cheeks flush with embarrassment and I lowered my gaze, realizing that I had just given away my feelings about the matter.
“Look, I’m sorry. I’m just exhausted,” I said, trying to cover up my true feelings.
They both smiled warmly at me, trying to diffuse the tension.
“It’s okay,” Sally said. “We’re the ones who should apologize since we wouldn’t shut up about it.”
Phoebe nodded in agreement. “We won’t talk about it anymore just so you can finally rest.”
Even though they made it seem like it was okay, I knew it wasn’t.
“I’ll just get some air,” I said, heading straight for the door and as soon as I closed it, I leaned against it, my heart heavy with a

mix of emotions.
Despite Tyler also being mentioned, why did only the thought of Max with Ruby in the same bedroom bother me so much?
I knew that the only way to make it stop was to clear my head. The thoughts were tormenting.
Without a second thought, I left the building. I was away from it in seconds and now into the forest, the wind whipping my hair back.
As I ran faster just so I could push myself, the exertion cleared my mind of everything except the need for speed. I didn’t even want to stop. I told myself that for as long as I focused on maintaining that lightning speed, nothing else could occupy my mind.
Suddenly, Lyra appeared in front of me and I was caught off guard, instantly stumbling backward and landing on some twigs.
I might’ve felt no pain, but it took a while for me to even sit up. I just lay there, trying to catch my breath as I pushed my hair back to get it away from my face.
Crouching beside me with a look of disapproval, she said, “What were you thinking, running out here like that? You can’t let your emotions control you like this. Looking at your speed, you could’ve hurt yourself.
“I can heal.”
“And the other creatures of this forest that can’t heal?”
I huffed, my cheeks burning with shame. I knew that Lyra was right.
“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice barely audible. “I just needed to get away from that room because-”
“You don’t have to explain anything because I already know it all.”
“Right, I forgot about that. Where have you been? And why couldn’t I reach you?”
“I just had things to do, things that are none of your business.”
I scoffed, attempting to sit up so I could get off the ground, but she placed her hand on top of my abdomen without coming in contact with me and I felt myself unable to move.
“Lyra? What are you doing?”
“I’m stopping you from getting up.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re not going to do it the regular way.”
“What? That makes no sense. Is there any other way of doing it?”
“For you, yes. You’re going to use the air.”
“Seriously? How can you just show up and we get right to training?”
“Do you prefer running like an idiot?”
“No.”
“Good, then our training session starts now. Get up.”

When she pulled back her hand and rose to her feet, I could no longer feel the weight of an invisible force pushing me down.
“Don’t even think about getting up without doing things my way,” she warned me.

I sighed in defeat, resting my head on the ground for a moment. How was I supposed to do this?
“You’re thinking too much. You only need to use the air surrounding your body and direct it underneath.”
“What?”
“There you go again, thinking too much about it.”
As she demonstrated, I got a better understanding of what I needed to do. It seemed so easy but I repeated the movement several times before I could even get the tiniest bit of progress.
I realized I needed to engage with Saga to become one and strike that balance. It was only then that I was at full force for that which was required of me. While still on the ground I finally directed enough force underneath my back and there I was, floating for a moment and my eyes widened.
“Whoa!” I chuckled.
“Don’t stop now! You’re not yet upright.”
“Right!”
Putting all my energy into it, I redirected the position of my body while manipulating the air around me. Once again, it took longer than I thought but when I finally got it right, I was upright and I couldn’t stop giggling.
“I did it!”
“Of course you did.”
I gasped, my eyes widening as my feet touched the ground. “Wait, does this mean I can fly?”
She got closer, shaking her head in disbelief. “I can’t believe you just asked me that when the answer is right in front of you.”
I nodded in understanding, then a certain realization came to me. “I actually did it.”
“Just by saying that, I know what you’re thinking, that you don’t need Max especially because of what happened with Koa, but there’s way more to it.”
The thought of Koa’s condescending nature made my blood boil and I clenched my fists.
“Who does Koa think he is?”
“I hate to break it to you but he’s exactly who he thinks he is.”
“You’re not making me feel any better.”
“Who says I’m trying to make you feel better? Anyway, this isn’t over just yet, so don’t worry yourself. I know I keep saying you need them by your side but Koa’s getting in the way. It won’t be long. You’ll get what you want.”
“I don’t really understand.”
She smirked. “Soon, you will.”
