Mysterious mate to the lycan prince (Addison and Max) novel Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Addison

Using the mind link again, my brothers and I wondered if we should make a run for it. Mr Hawkins’ words just felt like a warning.

He stood there, looking at the three of us with a half smile.

Just as he was about to get closer to our table, Aunt Nora’s chuckle caught our attention as she made her way back to us.

“Oh, no, you three,” she said to my brothers and I, shaking her head with a hand on her hip. “I leave you for a few seconds and you’re already facing trouble?”

Clearing his throat, Alpha Jeffrey said, “They’re not in any trouble.”

“I know trouble when I see it, so don’t speak for me,” she said to him, her tone a little harsh.

He lightly shook his head in disbelief before looking back at her again, as if trying to be tolerant.

Aunt Nora realised she was doing too much by lashing out at him like that, so she cleared her throat, taking her seat beside me again.

“What are you even doing here?” She shot him glares.

With a scoff, he said, “This is a steakhouse.”

“I’m not talking about this steakhouse,” she corrected him. “Why are you at this particular table?”

“I was just telling Addison that the Lycan King and his Luna are keeping a close eye on her after her impressive match the other day.”

“Does that sound right in your head?” She clicked her tongue.

“I don’t know what assumptions you’re making right now, but it doesn’t matter. I actually have something else to say.”

“What is it this time?” She slowly scrunched up one side of the menu.

“Ruby has been banned from the competition.”

“What?” The four of us said in unison.

“Yes, it’s because of her actions with Murphy. That was Alpha Warrick’s order.”

“Now I see what’s going on here.” Aunt Nora chuckled. “This is the part where you blame Addison for what happened to your daughter.”

“On the contrary, no. She shouldn’t blame herself. I should’ve punished Ruby myself and none of this would’ve happened. It’s not Addison’s fault.”

“This is unbelievable.” She chuckled bitterly, then shot him another glare. “Since when are you one to do the right thing?”

He sighed, his voice soft. “Nora, a lot of things have changed.”

It took her a few seconds to respond and when she did, she looked away. “You’re right about that.”

“Alright, then, I feel I’ve overstayed my welcome.”

Chapter 39

“Welcome?” She poked her cheek.

Alpha Jeffrey paused, clenching his jaw before smiling at us. “Anyway, I’ll be leaving now.”

“I was just about to say that,” she muttered.

As he walked away, she couldn’t take her eyes off him, eyes that seemed to be holding a grudge.

It was only when he was out of sight that she looked back at us and she paused, raising her eyebrows.

“Why are you all looking at me like that?” She forced a chuckle.

“What was that all about?” Cole asked, leaning forward.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She shrugged, looking back at the menu.

“Aunt, this is not the first time you’ve been like that around him,” Dylan reminded her.

You all don’t know what you’re talking about so forget about that. I’m just worried about you, Addie. Knowing Ruby, she just won’t let this go. It feels like there’s a target on your back. Will you be alright?”

“She’ll be just fine,” Lyra said, sitting right beside me.

Shocked, the rest of us looked at each other and then at her. We were obviously thinking the same thing.

“Where did you come from?” Cole tilted his head, subtly biting his lip as he checked her

out.

“Who knows?” Lyra shrugged. “I just felt that I had to be here at this particular moment. “Addison will be just fine. She’s been great.”

“Of course.” Cole nodded, unable to take his eyes off of her. “She showed us what she can do now and it’s all thanks to you. That was so impressive. Awesome stuff.”

“Yeah, well, she still has a long way to go.” Lyra only had her eyes glued to the menu as she perused.

“Uh oh, someone’s in love,” Dylan teased Cole using the mind link.

“Shut up,” Cole replied, trying to compose himself and bring back the cold demeanor that he showed outsiders, but we saw right through him.

Lyra may not have known what we were talking about since she couldn’t access the mind link, but I knew she’d eventually find out as she had access to my thoughts.

Though I found amusement in how much Dylan teased him, I got distracted when I received a message from Max. How could he text me at a moment when I was trying so hard to distract myself?

“Hey, where are you?” His first message said.

“Out.”

“Where?”

“Steakhouse.”

“Where?”

“Raven Mist.”

“You left?”

Chapter 39

“Yeah.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Why?”

“We need to talk. It has to be now.”

“I’m busy”

“It’s important. It’s about us.”

It took me a few seconds to begin typing as I wondered what exactly he meant. Was he talking about our relationship and the tension between us when we almost kissed? Or was he talking about my powers and his role in all of it? In the end, I told myself it didn’t matter.

“Fine. I’ll be back in a few hours.”

“Meet me at the same spot as last time. Don’t keep me waiting.”

Irritated by the second sentence, I began typing to lash out at him but suddenly, Lyra’s voice echoed in my mind.

“Don’t even think about it. What did I tell you about keeping your emotions in control?”

I quickly realised she could read everything by getting in my head.

“I just hate how I have no privacy when it comes to you.”

“Just focus on this moment. Put your phone down.”

Taking her advice, I put my phone down and we all ordered our food.

On my way to meet Max, I was on the phone with Gina, who kept talking about my brothers once she found out I was with them.

“I seriously can’t choose each time I think about your brothers. I wouldn’t mind having both!”

“Can you just stop?” I rolled my eyes.

“No and do you know what makes it worse? It’s the fact that they were there with you at the table. Had I been present, I would have had the chance to stare at both of them for quite a long time. The next time you’re hanging out with them, make sure you inform me and I’ll look my best.”

“You can’t be serious.”

“Oh, I am!”

“I just can’t believe that since this call started, we’ve only been talking about my brothers all because of you. I actually have something to tell you about Ruby.”

“Oh, I see exactly where this is going. You’re jealous that she had dinner at the palace.”

“What? No.”

“Do you hear yourself? You don’t even sound convincing.”

“You know what? Think whatever y

r you want.”

I clenched my jaw, remembering how I had lashed out at Phoebe and Sally. Gina had a point but I didn’t want to ad

“It doesn’t matter what they were up to,” I say to her. “I don’t care.”

“You don’t like Max?”

“I didn’t say that.”

She gasped. “That means you like him!”

“What…I didn’t say that either.”

“Oh, come on. You didn’t have to. I’m not even surprised.”

“About that dinner thing, I’ll never ask him about it. It’ll be up to him to tell me. Now, about Ruby, she’s been banned from the competition.”

“Really? What happened?”

“It was the Lycan King’s order.”

“Will you be okay?”

“Why is everyone so worried about me?”

“This is Ruby we’re talking about and now she has nothing to lose. What if she’s plotting something right now?”
