Chapter 74: Dungeon

Chapter 74: Dungeon

Max

I’d lost count of how many times I’d been pacing in my bedroom. The boundary spell on my bedroom door was still up. Each time I reached the door like I wanted to go out, something pressed against my chest like a warning for me not to go any further. I had even tried forcing it, but the one time I’d done that, I began to bleed and that made me retreat.

Davina had never been so powerful. All that just because she had used one strand of hair from Addison and I was to blame for it.

Knowing they had everything they needed made me anxious because I knew the goal wasn’t to make peace and there was nothing I could do about it.

I thought about what I could’ve done differently but knew there was no turning back and that was so frustrating that I slammed the wall with the palm of my hand just enough to make it crack.

In the long hallway, I could sense my mother’s presence getting closer, but that didn’t make me turn around in readiness for her in case she was coming to me.

The door was already wide open and in my peripheral vision, I saw her step inside, making me furrow my eyebrows. No one was supposed to go in or out of that room.

It made me wonder if the boundary spell had just been broken, but I didn’t turn to face her. I couldn’t stand the sight of her.

Then, she spoke, her tone commanding.

“Turn.”

That was all it took for me to obey. Not only was she my mother, she was also the Luna and my superior.

I didn’t raise my head right away after turning in her direction, making her chuckle lightly.

“You look miserable,” she said lightly as if commenting on the weather.

“What do you want?” I said, my tone cold.

She sighed. “Can’t I check on my son? It didn’t have to come to this, but this is what you get when you betray our family by ending up with someone like Addison. When it’s all over, you’ll be the only one to blame. I can already imagine her family painting you as a monster. You’re about to become their downfall.”

“No. You’re not going to pin this on me.” I firmly shook my head after it shot up. “I didn’t want any part of this. You and Da-”

My words caught in my throat because something has just shifted. I sensed an unmistakable presence that I shouldn’t have sensed at all. It was never meant to be there at that moment and my forehead creased with confusion.

“No, I whispered. “This isn’t possible.”

She tilted her head, watching me with amusement. “What is it, my son?”

I swallowed hard. She knew what I was thinking. I could see it in her eyes and she was just waiting for me to say it.

“Aunt Nora,” I said with dread, “she wasn’t in the palace just a few seconds ago.”

Her lips curved into a sinister smile. “Well,” she chuckled like she was pleased. “You felt that right on time. You’re right. She’s definitely here. Davina’s become really impressive with her spells, but hey, it’s all thanks to Addison’s hair. That’s how she was able to get Nora first. This will be such a delight.”

“What have you done?” I stepped forward, like I could actually do something about it.

She turned towards the door and said, “Why don’t you come and see for yourself in the dungeon?”

My heart skipped a beat with panic. The dungeon wasn’t a place for someone like Nora.

Chapter 74 Dungeon

I closed my eyes, desperate to reach Addison with the mind link, but just like all the other times I’d tried it, nothing happened. I couldn’t even reach Tyler. Whatever spell Davina had done to block the use of the mindlink within the palace made it impossible to reach anyone. The only one I could talk to was Koa because

we were one.

For a moment, it felt like my mother had stopped moving further away from my room and I confirmed it when she casually spoke to me.

“What are you waiting for? I thought you wanted to see Nora. Just in case you didn’t see me come in and go out of your room, the boundary spell is over now. I really hope you join us in the dungeon. That way, we can enjoy the show together.”

She hummed as she began to head towards the other end of the hallway, like it was just another beautiful day.

I didn’t care if she was playing tricks or not, I just wanted to see Nora and what was going on in that dungeon. There had to be something I could do to get her out of there.

My heart raced faster as I got closer to the dungeon, the smell of damp stone and old blood reminding me of why I didn’t like going down there.

There were torches lit along the stairs and as I looked at them, I could feel Koa trying to communicate.

“How about you just get one of these torches and burn it all down?” he suggested.

“I’ve thought of it, but the consequences are just…” I trailed off with a sigh of frustration.

Then, I heard Nora before I could even see her.

“Please!” Her voice was strained. “Jeffrey, don’t do this.”

I finally made it all the way down and turned at the corner. It was then that I saw everything.

My father stood tall and unbothered, his hands clasped behind his back. My mother was right beside him, watching Nora like that was some sort of entertainment.

As Davina drew a ritual circle around Nora, she was being chained, the man fastening the iron restraints that were smeared with blood around her wrists being Jeffrey.

From everything I’d heard and seen, those two had history together. That explained why he wasn’t even able to look at her. His hands shook slightly as he continued to work on the chains.

“Jeff,” she pleaded softly with him. “We’ve known each other for so long. You were part of our pack. I know things are different now, but this isn’t you. Please.”

“Don’t waste your time, Nora,” my father chimed in, his voice nonchalant. “You see, Jeffrey doesn’t have a choice. He follows the Alpha’s orders and nothing gets in the way of that. Last time, you were spared, but I’m not letting that happen again.”

After the chains locked into place, Jeffrey stepped back and it was only when he was out of the way that she could finally see what she couldn’t see before… me. Her eyes narrowed with fury.

“You!” she yelled, her voice straining even more. “I trusted you! And to think that my niece loves you so much! You’re just like your father!”

“No,” I said, quickly stepping forward. “I’m nothing like him. I didn’t do this.”

“Oh, but you did,” Davina cut in with a dark chuckle as she drew a circle around Nora and her. “Everything you did when you met up with Addison is what has led to this moment right here.” She then drew an arrow with two heads on both ends between the two of them. “You’re the reason Nora is here and-”

“That’s enough talking,” my father said. “We’ve wasted enough time, Davina. Get this started.”

She bowed, then began to chant quietly for a few seconds before getting louder. At that moment, the arrow went up in flames and Nora’s breath quickened. I could see the discomfort in her face, like her skin was on fire and she couldn’t even touch it to make it stop.

When Davina raised her hands and Nora burst into bloody tears with an agonizing scream like it hurt, I couldn’ t bear to see it, so I tried to stop it by charging towards the circle, but it happened again. Another boundary

spell slammed into me, throwing me back into my previous spot. It was then that I realized that all I could do was watch helplessly as Nora was tortured.

I thought that was it, but my father’s next words made my blood boil. “Hurry up Davina. I want Addison to see and feel this.”
