The discharge paperwork took a while. I signed things I didn’t bother to read, answered questions concerning my pain levels as a nurse remove the IV from the back of my hand with a practiced efficiency
Kieran was at the door waiting for me. He’d brought clean clothes from the penthouse. I had no idea how he knew my sizes and I wasn’t going to ask him at all.
The drive home was quiet. We were both buried in our different worlds and needed no distraction. Somehow, we understood that and the silence continued. The city moved past the window in grey morning light. I squirmed my eyes a bit as I watched the streets I had known for years. A little time away and some parts of it felt a bit different.
Kieran drove with one hand on the wheel; I watched the road instead of him.
He glanced at me from the rearview mirror. “Are you warm enough?”
“Yes,”. I said.
That was most of the conversation. The penthouse felt larger than I remembered. The time away had made the space bigger and the hallway longer but I knew deep down it was still the same building, nothing changed.
Kieran carried my bag to the guest room without being asked. “You need all the rest you can get.”
“I know.”
“Do you need anything before-”
“I’m fine, Kieran.” My voice was a bit firmer than I had intended.
He stood in the doorway for a moment and he was about to say something else, something that would require more from both of us than either of us was prepared to give right now.
I waited with bated breathe but at the last second he changed his mind. He just nodded and closed the I door.
I lay down on top of the covers without undressing and stared at the ceiling.
My mind wandered to the clip. It was still on my phone and I hadn’t watched it again. It was just there waiting for me to figure what I wanted to do with it.
Eli and Alyssa were real. The fact that Kieran had a child he had never mentioned was real and none of that stopped mattering because I left the hospital.
The question still remained: what was I going to do with the discovery?

I thought about the contract. It was created in the cleanest way possible that allowed two people the escape
ey wanted. I had wanted an exit from my family’s pressure and Kieran? I had no idea what he gained from the arrangement, initially, it didn’t bother me but as the wedding day grew closer and with the discovery of another family he kept from me, the uncertainty began to weigh heavier.
A lot of things weren’t adding up.
He went into a burning building to rescue me and his hands had trembled after the fact. Those were not the hands of a man performing a contract.
But on the other hand, he didn’t tell me about his son.
I turned that over for a long time and still wasn’t about to make head or tails out of it. What was I supposed to do with all this? I was arriving at feelings for something and someone I never factored in feelings for.
That was the part I kept arriving at. If I was to be honest with myself, I was aware that I was starting to want more from Kieran than this arrangement had ever offered and the recent discoveries didn’t dent my desire. It made me want him to want to tell me.
I heard him in the hallway about an hour later. Quiet footsteps, then stillness, then the low sound of his voice as he made a call.
I didn’t mean to listen but it didn’t matter as the walls in the penthouse weren’t soundproof either and it wasn’t like I could turn off my ears. His voice did the thing it does when something difficult has resolved.
I heard him move toward the guest room. He knocked twice, lightly, the way you knock on a door when you’re not sure if someone is asleep.
“Come in,” I said.
He opened the door and leaned against the frame. He looked lighter like he had let go of the weight that pressed him on our trip back to the penthouse.
He slid the phone into his pocket.
“Good news?” I asked.
“A friend’s surgery went well. He’s headed home.”
I looked at him but his gaze was directed at something outside the window on something I couldn’t quite figure out.
“That’s good,” I said.
“Yes,”
I knew who the friend was and I was sure it was no surgery but whatever had happened must had been good for him. I let it slide because I wasn’t ready to have it yet myself. To ask that question meant having to deal with the answer that followed and I wasn’t ready.
So I just said, “I’m glad they’re okay.”
