I woke up before the alarm rang. It was still dark, the kind of darkness that amplified any vehicle sound, making it wrong and suspicious.
I dressed without turning on the main light. I was going myself and without anyone’s knowledge.
It was a bad look; I didn’t need anyone to tell me that: A bridegroom, days away from his wedding taking another woman and his child to the airport. I also knew that one photograph or video being made by anybody watching would create a whole new complication and this one was more complication I rather not have, explaining it would be quite the ordeal.
Complication or not, it didn’t matter because Eli needed me.
He was asleep in the back of the car against Alyssa when I got there. He rested himself on her thighs and had one hand between his lap, the way a child slept when he had been dragged from the comfort of his bed. The drowsiness in his eyes told me the weight of the sickness was heavy on him.
I checked him twice through the rear view mirror thrice in one minute.
“He’s fine,” Alyssa said, without looking up.
“I know.”
She met my eyes at the rear view mirror when we got to another intersection but didn’t say anything.
We drove mostly in silence. Alyssa was comfortable with silence and I was grateful for the fact that she didn’t bother to have a conversation.
Eli woke when we got to the highway. He rubbed his eyes with his hands. He looked at Alyssa then at me. “Where are we going?”
“The airport.” came Alyssa’s reply.
He was quiet for a moment. “Are we going home?”
“Yes.”
He was quiet before he looked at me,
“You’re not coming?”
I kept my eyes on the road. “Not this time.”
He didn’t say anything but the slight tension in his shoulders told me he understood more than I wanted him to.

The terminal was almost empty. I handled the checking in of the luggage and made sure Eli’s drugs was in
e carry on bag rather than the checked bag. Alyssa must be exhausted if she was letting me doing all
these.
We found a corner near the departures lounge and waited.
Eli stayed close to me and remained silent. His eyes and subtle movement of his chin told me he was still processing what he had learnt.
Alyssa began packing their bags when the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.
Eli grabbed my collar, his fingers tightened even as I straightened.
“Eli,” I said.
He said nothing but still held on. I crouched down to his level. “It’s time.”
He stared into my eyes with an expression that was torn between bravery and honesty. “When are you coming?”
“I’ll be there in three weeks time.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Count the days.”
He stared at my eyes. “Promise?”
“Promise.”
He let go of my collar and immediately hugged me. I could feel the wet stain of tears on my neck as he tried to remain brave by stifling his cries. It was worse than any tantrum he could have thrown.
I held him. “You don’t have to be brave with me.”
He cried for a little while and I let him. His deliberate slow breathing told me he had finished crying.
He pulled back to look at me. “Three weeks.”
“Three weeks.”
He nodded and stepped aside. I went to Alyssa and gave her a hug. “Call when you land,” I said.
“I will.”
“And don’t reschedule the follow-up appointment.”
“Kieran.”
“I mean it.”

She shot me a look. ” Ok I won’t.”
“And eat something on the plane. And I don’t mean the crackers.”
She almost smiled. “You’re going to be a good father.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Why not?”
I had no idea if I was going to be involved in Eli’s life after today.
