Chapter 103
Denise POV

The penthouse was quiet like a graveyard in the mornings. I knew that before, but recently it seemed the large space amplified the silence and made every sound louder than it was. The wedding seem to make everything move faster when everything was still.
I stared at the toast that I suddenly had no appetite for and the coffee that had gone cold/lost in my head with my phone face-down on the table.
I turned it over when it vibrated. There was attachment from Dante. I knew without looking at the sender. There was no text which meant the attachment whatever it was, was completely self explanatory.
I looked at it and the first person I was noticed was Eli. The child’s face was buried in Kieran’s neck and his arms around him. Even with his back to me, I knew he was crying and Kieran’s hand on his shoulder was more assuring than polite, the way he gripped his shoulder told me everything.
I stared at it for a long time before my gaze went to Alyssa. She stood there with her hand on his arm that wasn’t intimate or romantic, just the air of someone who was comfortable with the proximity they had.
The photograph was taken from a distance and it was quite early or quite late I couldn’t decide. Kieran had no idea he was being photographed.
I remembered the milky sweetness of a pup and the steady recent smell of the omega underneath it I got from his scent when he came to see me in the hospital. With the picture, the scent now had a face.
I knew what Dante wanted me to feel but it was the reason I didn’t want to feel it. I wasn’t going to give him that benefit.
Dante always had a reason for his actions. Unlike other times, I could read his intentions clearly this time: he wanted me to feel like an outsider and I wasn’t going to do that.
I opened the private folder on my phone instead.
The hospital corridor clip was still there and the facts I had discovered.
Eli and Alyssa were a big part of Kieran’s life so much that Eli held him at an airport and refused to let go. That was true regardless of whatever context Dante had tried to contrive.
I poured the cold coffee down the sink, brewed a fresh cup and went to the window.
I took a sip as my mind over the arrangement we had created for the umpteenth time had. We made no clause to be transparent so he hadn’t breach any agreement we had made.
All these while, the contract was something I had regarded as an abstract concept but staring at Eli’s tear- streaked face and Kieran holding him made me realize the contract was real and I was about to enter a marriage with a man who has real people in his life that I know nothing about.
