Chapter 112

Dante POV

It seemed even the city had dressed itself for the wedding..

I stood at the window of the Blackwood penthouse and watched the billboard cycle displa the two of them together in some approved photograph that the media team had selected for maximum impact. Beneath it, the words: THE NIGHTSHADE WEDDING TOMORROW.

–

The news channels were all reported the same things. The wedding was the season’s most anticipated event because an outsider had been chosen by the Nightshade heir.

I turned away from the window.

My phone was on the table where I had left it. It had been two weeks and no reply from Denise about the picture I had sent her. No news of a confrontation by Denise got to me.

I had expected anger or a reaction at the very least but Denise had gone quiet.

I had known Denise long enough to know that her silence meant she was thinking and she was much more dangerous than when she reacted off the fly.

I should have been pleased that the photograph had unsettled her but I wasn’t because her silence unsettled me.

I thought about Elena and how she had been different since the hospital since the hospital. She smiled every now and then but there was something cautious underneath it now like she was seeing who I was for the first time.

I hated that possibility because if Elena was beginning to see me clearly, I knew it was a matter of time before she asked a question I had been avoiding for years. Why are you still doing this?

I walked away from the table. I blinked the totaled remain of the car came into view in my mind. I had avoided that particular thought for the better part of three weeks.

She almost hadn’t survived.

I had told myself for years that everything I did was to protect her against people who had ulterior motives for her like Kieran. I had no proof of his ulterior motive but the absence of evidence isn’t the evidence of absence.

I had no idea know when protection had become possession and where keeping her safe had become keeping her.

I knew that now but I had no idea when it happened.

I closed my eyes and I was back to the academy corridor. Denise leaned against the wall, blood on her lip, willing herself not to cry. She had understood even then that showing weakness to the wrong people was

more dangerous than whatever had caused the wound.

I had knelt beside her and said I wouldn’t let anyone hurt her again.

At sixteen, that had been simple, things at that age was really simple. I had meant she was someone worth protecting and I would be the one who did it.

I opened my eyes.

Somewhere between sixteen and now, something had changed. It went from protecting her to protecting her from people to finally choosing people she could trust. I knew what I had become but I had trouble calling the word.

The billboard changed again outside.

I thought about what I had. The photograph was one piece and the timeline that didn’t add up if Kieran was being honest with Denise about his history. I had imagined walking up to her before the ceremony to tell her everything and watch the wedding collapse under the weight of secrets Kieran had been withholding.

I shook the image out of my head because I knew she would disappear if that ever happened.

That was the part I knew for certain, Denise would see it as a ploy of mine to get her back and that will destroy the remaining shards of everything we once shared.

I picked up my phone and stared at her contact. I could call her and tell her everything Kieran had not told her and let her decide what to do with it before she walked down the aisle.

The old version of me would have done it. I would have justified my selfish reason by calling it “looking out for her”; the reason that gave me the justification to make certain decisions for her.

My thumb stayed still and I dropped the phone.

I walked back to the window. There was no stopping it now I thought as I smiled wistfully.

Even now I couldn’t say for sure if I was telling the truth or hoping it would become the truth by morning. However, one thing had been crystal clear: I could not decide for Denise.

But if she asked me tomorrow what I knew, I would tell her because I had realized there was a difference between controlling someone and refusing to lie for someone else’s benefit and I intended to stand on the right side of it.

The billboard changed and Denise’s face appeared.

I looked at her and watched the word form underneath.

Tomorrow.

I stepped back from the window and turned off the television.

The penthouse went quiet.
