I was awake before the day got bright. I looked at the ceiling, wondering why the morning felt heavier than usual till I turned my head, saw the dress hanging across the room, and remembered.

It was today. The thought arrived quietly; today I marry Kieran Nightshade. I lay still for another moment before getting up.

The penthouse was already alive with motion. Someone carried an arrangement of flowers past the door, two women from the wedding team in hushed tones probably about decorations.

Rosaline moved through everything making adjustments where needed.

Andrea came through the door carrying coffee and her wedding planner. She stopped when she saw me. “Good. You’re awake.”

“Does any version of this morning where I wasn’t awake exist?”

She set the coffee on the table. “It was the only one that existed till ten minutes ago. I was of the mind to wake you.”

“Why didn’t you?”

She looked at me. “I decided you’d be terrifying.”

“I’m terrifying?”

She glanced at the schedule. “I wasn’t going to take chances. So you have your hair at seven-thirty, makeup at eight and breakfast by eight-thirty. Photographs at nine-fifteen and Rosaline wants you downstairs at ten. You’re not allowed to disappear.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

She looked at me. “That’s why I’m telling you.”

I laughed as Andrea handed me the coffee and left to manage something else.

The makeup artist arrived at eight, I sat before the mirror and let her work.

My phone was on the table beside me. The file was still there, the timeline about the discovery I had made and Eli’s face against Kieran’s neck and Kieran holding the boy with a natural ease in that picture. They all added up a question I hadn’t asked because I wasn’t quite sure I was ready to hear the answer.

I had stared at that image for a long time in the days after Dante sent it, waiting for jealousy to arrive. At least, that was what Dante intended when he sent it to me.

Over the days I spent mulling over that picture I realized that Kieran loved the boy.

I looked at myself in the mirror while someone moved a brush through my hair. I wasn’t going to ask a

an to amputate parts of his life to prove anything to me. I found the thought surprising because I wasn’t certain when Kieran’s choices had started mattering to me in that particular way.

The makeup artist stepped back and exclaimed. “Beautiful.”

I stared at the mirror; the woman that looked back was composed and elegant.

I thought about the contract. It was simple and honest, two people using each other for their needs. It was better than most arrangements but somehow, especially after the hospital, the contract started holding things it wasn’t designed to hold.

I didn’t know exactly when it had happened and didn’t bother to because the real question was simpler and harder: What was I walking toward?

Was I walking toward Kieran? The man who didn’t use the contract as an excuse to restrict me, the man who stood at the doorway and told me he will be there when I needed, the man who was still keeping something from me. The last thought made me uneasy but I also refused to let it erase the weight of everything I had actually witnessed.

Rosaline appeared in the doorway.

She looked at me for a moment. “Ready?”

I considered the question properly. “No.”

She smiled. “Good.”

I stared at her with raised eyebrows. “why?”

“People who are certain aren’t honest to themselves or haven’t thought about it enough.”

She came forward and adjusted one strand of hair, very gently. “You can’t know everything today.”

“I think I need to know one thing.”

“What?”

I looked at myself in the mirror. “Am I going to be involved in his life?”

Rosaline was quiet for a moment. “You’ll know when you see him.”

The dress was brought out and I stepped into it. The fabric settled around me as someone fastened the final clasp.

Before today I was the girl from St. Mira who had learned to make herself small and felt desires were liabilities and traps. I looked at myself and thought about the woman that girl had become.

A woman who survived countless storms and battles to be where she is now.

The clip was still on my phone and I had questions, some theories and some facts I had discovered.
