Chapter 114
Kieran POV
The room was ready before I was.

I checked the time; I had been standing for ten minutes but it seemed longer than that. The glass door were open toward the garden and I saw the people illuminated by the morning light as they sat in rows and columns waiting for the ceremony to begin.
I noticed the council members sayt on the left side. The flowers Denise had picked without consulting my mother were arranged in between the rows of seats. The ceremonial objects were on the table on the left and the marriage documents were on the table on the right.
I became hyper vigilant whenever I felt overwhelmed by a situation so I scanned the room as a means to regain control.
My father was seated in the third row. He was in a three piece suit and looked regal, which was a long way from the tired countenance he always portrayed these days.
He looked well which was a big deal all things considered. His gaze locked onto me and he gave a slight nod.
I thought about what he had told me. She is the right one.
I had always thought my dad meant she was a good match politically due to her poise and charisma, after assessing her the first time he saw her.
But now, he hadn’t been talking only about politics, he had seen something I deliberately choose not to
see.
I looked away from him because I knew why I didn’t want to see what he saw. Seeing it, would leave me no other choice but have that conversation about Alyssa and Eli I kept pushing forward.
I had kept telling myself: after the wedding.
The wedding was eleven minutes away, and I still hadn’t told her.
Jayce was beside me.
He didn’t say anything; he had always been a man of few words, he gave me a sideways glance that said he understood the weigh of the moment I was in.
I didn’t respond to it and looked toward the closed doors at the far end of the room.
The thought arrived without invitation.
I remembered the feeling of disappointment that overwhelmed me when I came out and she was nowhere in sight. I had began to understand her silences better; I knew when she was thinking and when she was

not.

I had memorized her in a way I had not given myself permission to do.
Denise had gone from being the solution to my problems to being the person I wanted to talk after I had the solutions to my problems.
I had no word to explain what the thoughts evoked in me.
I had convinced myself over the course of the past few weeks that I couldn’t be possessive when it came to her because we weren’t mated but if I was being honest, I had been living like my life already contained her.
The music shifted and it broke my train of thought.
I turned toward the doors. Every thought that had been swirling in my head went quiet.
The doors opened and I saw her walk in. I saw the woman who had spent years learning to take up exactly the right amount of space, who lived the only life St Mira could have given and the woman who had walked into my office months ago and negotiated the terms of an arrangement with the calm precision of someone who had long ago stopped expecting things to simply go well.
She was not looking like someone being delivered but one who made a decision to come through. As she walked down, the first thing I realized was that she was walking to me because she had chosen to.
Her scent reached me before she was halfway down the aisle. The suppressants she took always kept it under lock but a few times I was in close to her, my wolf got glimpse of her scent and stirred in a way that was beyond reason.
Now with the ceremonial proximity, my wolf recognized her as a match.
The council had told me this would happen. I tried to be rational about it but then I realized that nothing was rational about instinct.
She was close enough that I could see her eyes. She knew that I was keeping something from her yet she had come anyway.
It seemed my face betrayed my thoughts for she gave a slight nod that answer the question in my head. The nod conveyed with an intimate certainty that she was here, focused on the moment and not looking too far ahead,
She stopped beside me.
The officiant began: “Kieran Nightshade-”
I barely heard it.
I was looking at Denise. My head was mulling over the questions it had been asking for months: would this arrangement work? Would it crumble under the weight of expectations and secrets that I kept from her? Would the practical arrangement that we made with clear logic hold steady?
