CHAPTER 115

DENISE POV

My hand rested on Mrs. Adeyemi’s arm.

I already picked her a long time ago and told Rosaline when it became absolutely necessary for the wedding plan.

It didn’t need any deliberation. It was one of the few things in my life that I had been completely sure of

Mrs. Adeyemi had been there from the very beginning. She had been a steadying presence when everything around me was in a constant state of flux. She had allowed me a shot at having a life when I thought I had no chance.

I never knew my father. When I was younger, it felt like a part of me was missing and I didn’t know how to make myself whole. I looked at the woman beside me.

She looked back.

“Are you ready?” she said.

“No,” I said.

She smiled. “Good. No one is ever ready for these things.”

The doors opening and the swelling of the music killed the hushed conversations happening in the rows of chairs. Growing in St. Mira, being watched constantly always kept one thought in my head: Don’t make a mistake. That thought always rang in my head and it almost started now but another thought came in: I chose this.

I started looking almost immediately. My eyes moved across the assembled guests with the systematic attention I used to scan for threats. A woman on the end of the left row, two women in the third row.

I was looking for a face I had never seen. I was honest enough to admit that to myself even while doing it. I had constructed a profile from the clip, lingering scent on Kieran and the photographs.

She represented the secrets that Kieran was keeping from me. I wondered if she was just the whole deal or ; there were something more.

I didn’t realize I was walking with bated breathe to the altar.

I didn’t realize I was walking with bated breathe to the altar. Every time I was on the cusp of something good, there was always something ready to take it away from me.

Several times, I had inagined Alyssa barging in last minute or Dante rising to his feet in the middle of our

VOWS

I had rehearsed enough scenarios that disaster came to feel natural.

Nothing happened as I reached the midpoint of the room and found no threat waiting for me there.

I was almost disoriented; I had spent so much effort preparing for disruption and completely overlooked the possibility that the only thing waiting at the end of this walk was a choice.

Then I found him and what I saw startled me a bit. I had every version of Kieran except the one that was currently facing me. He wasn’t putting on a show of control or mask of indifference, what showed on his face was something that seemed totally out of his hands.

It frightened me more than anything else would have.

He wasn’t looking at the dress, but the girl from the east quarter who had learned to make herself smaller because she never learnt to take up space; the woman who knew something about him that he didn’t know she knew.

He looked at me like he was relieved I showed up.

The timeline I had created about Eli and Alyssa flashed through my head. Numbers and time could be calculated but not Kieran’s expression.

Mrs. Adeyemi’s hands tightened slightly around my arm. She was reminding me she was here and I wasn’t entering the new world of mine alone and that my past or who I was didn’t disappear because I was choosing something new.

We reached the front and she stopped.

I took the final step myself. Kieran was directly in front of me now.

He was close enough for his scent to begin to mess with the distance I had built in my mind. I could see the slight tightening along his jaw. I noted that he hadn’t looked away since the doors opened and I walked in.
