Chapter 121

Dante POV

The office was quiet when I opened the laptop..

The city had been awake for hours and decided to carry on without me. The sun was almost overhead and the broadcast was already running.

I had found the wedding coverage before I decided to look for it. The TV hosts and guests were discussing the implications of the marriage on the alliances and relationships that existed between the pack and other packs but I listened to none of it.

I was only interested in Denise. The ceremony footage began with the arrival sequence.

I watched Mrs. Adeyemi walk beside her as the guests rose. I watched Kieran at the front of the room, watching her every step as she made her way to him. I saw Denise’s face. There was no fear or pretext of composure on her face as she walked down. She wasn’t trying to make the best of a bad situation rather she looked like someone who had made a decision.

I stopped the video and I pressed play again. It took a lot to watch the mating ceremony.

The TV hosts talked about the biological significance of the mating bond and its effect on the crowd. Rosaline started crying without knowing, Aldrich watched the ceremony like a man who had spent a fortune to be here and didn’t want to miss anything. Kieran’s friends were still and paid rapt attention to the ceremony.

I watched Denise receive the bond.

My biggest objection to the marriage was it began as a contract but it didn’t feel that way. The room didn’t look like it was watching something artificial rather watching something happen.

I let that sit and I appeared on screen.

I had known this part was recorded even without seeing any clips of it. I watched myself with a detached feeling of cringe.

James was just doing his job, I understood it better now. Denise appeared, looking composed in a totally different way from the ceremony.

I watched myself grab her wrist.

I don’t know what I had expected her to feel, what I wanted to communicate was the connection the history of the years had given us, at least that was what I was drawing to leverage but I saw a different reaction.

I believed I still had the influence to pick up from wherever from I left. I heard my voice say, you belonged to me, and watched her go very still.

Chapter 121

I knew what I intended but looking at it now, I heard what she heard.

I stopped waiting for scraps the day you walked away from a burning car.

I paused the footage and stared at the frozen image on the screen.

She looked me in the eyes as I said Kieran was using her and said maybe.

On those steps, it felt like an opening to prod at but now I understood that wasn’t the case.

She had said maybe because she didn’t feel the need to assure me of anything.

What I heard was the closing of a door and not the opening of one.

I let the footage continue.

James arrived with back up and removed me from the premises without so much as a flicker of anything on his face. Dante keep mouthing off a couple of things I no longer remembered and then the corridor was empty.

Then Denise appeared in the frame walking back toward the reception.

She didn’t look back at all; she just walked through the doors.

She faced Kieran and he just stared at her from across the room. He didn’t walk to her or said anything, he just stretched his hand towards and she took it, without so much as a second thought, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

I replayed that part.

They stood in the centre of the reception, holding hands. He asked her something and she responded with the same economy of words he used.

I had given her a way out but she went to him instead. That was all I could think of as I replayed the footage over and over again. She had come back to Kieran because she wanted to be there. It didn’t matter whatever I would done or said because she had already chosen, and my arrival hadn’t changed the direction of the choice, it just confirmed it.

My phone was on the desk, the number of notifications from the message app had increased from seventeen to twenty five. Whoever they were could wait, I had no intentions of speaking to some people today. Elena’s name however sat at the top of the list.

I had seen it thirty minutes ago but I ignored it because responding to her message meant abandoning the video which I wasn’t quite ready to do.

I picked up the phone and finally opened her message. We need to talk tonight.

I stared at it, and typed What happened? I almost pressed send before I deleted it and put the phone down.

The problem was that I had no clue what she was talking. There were too many possibilities: The wedding,
