Chapter 127

Denise POV

Kieran knew something was wrong before he entered the house.

He hadn’t said a word but the look on his face and pause at the door was enough. He watched me carefully trying to read what was on my face.

He stepped forward tentatively and after a brief moment, “Are you alright?”

I nodded too fast. “Yes.”

He looked at me for another moment.

“We should talk but not tonight.”

He accepted despite obvious need to push back. He tilted his head slowly and went into the room.

When I entered the room, he was already asleep. I changed and laid besides him, not even the bond could bridge this gap between us without effort from him especially.

I closed my eyes, tomorrow was going to be a long day and I needed all the sleep I could get.

I had had had a say in the wedding venue but none for this ceremony because the ceremony had been done in this particular venue for the past two hundred years. I could feel the reverence and weight of countless rituals gone by as I stepped into the premises. The chambers and walls stood with hallowed dignity as I walked past them to antechamber where Rosaline came to later join me.

“How much do you know of the ceremony?”

“I read the materials.”

“And?”

“I know what to expect or some idea I think.”

She studied me carefully. “You don’t have to do everything today. They just want to see you put in effort.”

I held onto that. She held my shoulder, smiled at me and left me with my thoughts.

Two hundred wolves, that number felt small and abstract but in the room, that number of people looking at you, waiting expectantly felt overwhelming.

No amount of reading could prepare me for this, I had understood that within the first thirty seconds.

Scent carried more than just smell. It was the history of a person being learned in one whiff or inhale and that was the closest way to explain what was happening.

For someone who had spent the better part of two decades taking suppressants, being inhaled by two

dred wolves felt like exposure.

I breathed deeply and stood my ground. Kieran was beside me, the bond warm and offering me a source of strength but I was determined to stand on my own merit.

The senior family representatives approached first. The ritual started awkwardly and I get used to the motions. In the middle of the sequence but then something began to happen that I hadn’t anticipated the people became persons, each with their distinct weight and scents.

An elderly woman’s scent had the heaviness that only grief could create in her scent. She was grieving somebody close to her and I thought of Mrs. Adeyemi For a second, we became two people fluent in the language of empathy.

A young man, early twenties trying his best to appear confident when he clearly wasn’t reminded me of the children in St. Mira who put on airs of bravado rather than admit they were scared.

A family who were victims of the fire. I had never met them before but the scent did what it did best: created an awareness where one shouldn’t exist.

Aldric came to me. He stared at me and with all solemnity he could muster, he leaned down and said,

“The packs always know when someone has decided to belong.”

He moved on before I could answer, his words remaining with me through the remainder of the

ceremony.

Midway through the ceremony. Kieran left. I had been bracing for that, the pack had to receive the Luna as an entity also and not just as a part of the mated pair.

I stood alone in the center of the room but I knew I wasn’t alone. I felt Kieran’s eyes on me through the bond.

Well, nothing to do now but go with it.

I thought about what it meant to be a Luna. What were my duties? What were the expectations on me? I thought about it and realized I had been doing versions of that work for most of my adult life. I never thought of it as leadership; I just saw it as paying forward the kindness I had been a beneficiary growing up. I realized being part of anything came with obligations and for the first time it didn’t feel like a debt but duties I looked forward to.

Toward the end, I thought about Mrs. Adeyemi in her office probably working while two hundred wolves surrounded me now.

I thought about the messages I got days ago.

I was the Luna of one of the most significant packs in this city and someone had already reminded me that my new status wasn’t enough to protect the people in my life.

I kept that thought aside and concentrated on being present during the scent ritual.
