I had known about Eli for a while now, about two years.

I wasn’t aware of the specifics but I knew there was a child and he had a complicated relationship with Alyssa who I noticed was the only person that received preferential treatment from Kieran.

That was all I knew, Kieran was the kind of person who gave information only when he deemed it absolutely necessary.

I was one of the few people who could ask him personal questions without consequences so I did.

He had told me enough and I didn’t ask again. Badgering Kieran with questions always yielded the opposite result.

I had thought that being patient, waiting for Kieran to give me information was the best strategy but I realized I was wrong.

I noticed the first sign on a Tuesday. Kieran read the same report twice in twenty minutes. I sat besides him when I noticed his head at the bottom of the page again. His eyes had the particular gaze of a man whose thoughts had wandered and lost track of what he originally doing.

I said nothing. The next day he had asked me about the Kellerman contract and I had replied him only for him to ask the same question in less than fifteen minutes.

On Thursday, he had closed early and said he was going somewhere but having known him better than others I knew the destination he told me was the last place on his mind.

On Friday he kept looking at his phone, waiting for a message that never came.

I had watched Kieran managed difficult situations for many years but none had him on the ropes like this.

Whatever that was eating at him was challenging all his coping methods in a way that started making uncharacteristically sloppy.

We were in his office Friday afternoon when I decided to say something. “You know she’s going to find out eventually,”

He understood without explanations. “I’m going to tell her”.

“That’s not what I said.”

He looked at me.

“You have been planning for a while.”

He was quiet for a moment. “The timing has been complicated.”

He looked at the window.

He didn’t answer but I knew he had heard me and that was enough.

My contact called at six. It was someone that kept me abreast of the investigation. Unlike Kieran, I was able to chase down leads into places his status would have given him away.

“I found something.” my contact said,

“Go on.”

“A partial receipt from the supplier’s internal system generated an automatic transaction log that didn’t get included in the cleanup.”

“Because they scrubbed from the inside,” I completed for him.

“Exactly. The system integration created records externally.”

He told me the name on the transaction log and I wrote it down.

“I don’t recognize it,” I said.

“Neither did we at first.”

“At first?”

“It took some searching. The name passed a standard routine check when we ran it.”

“But…”

“But the address associated with the business registration is a known front and it’s been involved in some pretty shady deals.”

I looked at the name I’d written. “Who does this person work for?”

“That is what we haven’t been able to establish yet.”

Then I sat at my desk and looked at the name for a while. I was struggling to reconcile it with the working hypothesis we had: Lyra hired the arsonist through intermediaries. This name didn’t fit that chain.

Two things sprung to my mind: either the investigation hadn’t discovered this part of the chain and how it connected to the already known intermediaries or the investigation was looking at the whole chain wrongly; Neither possibility was reassuring,

I pulled up what I could from the records.
