It’s been five days and no messages from Marco. He had said he would wait for my response and so far he stuck to his word. There was no coincidental run -in at any function, no follow-up messages or any intermediaries delivering quiet reminders.

Something told me I would have preferred that than this total radio silence.

I could remember what he had said. I want a partner I can trust.

It kept ringing in my head over the last few days despite my strong reluctance to pay him any mind. The more I resisted, the louder the thought grew in my head.

What irked me the most was his attitude. He expected my trust to be given naturally like we were regular couples that had gone on a few dates.

My mind went back to the fire and I knew there was nothing ordinary about my life.

I had breakfast with the rest of the family and nobody pointed out any changes in my behavior which was exactly what I had hoped and intended.

My mother talked about some scandal that happened at a gala and how it was being kept under the wraps which elicited a few guttural expressions from my dad and gasps from my cousin.

Father veered into politics as always, talking about three families found themselves in the middle of a dispute that neither of them had seen coming.

My younger cousin asked if there was any date for the wedding and I gave her a simple no.

My mother stared at me for a while during a lull in the conversation. “You seem calmer lately.”

I took a sip of coffee. “I’ve been getting enough sleep.”

She accepted this. I was quieter not calmer; there were certain things I couldn’t discuss with anyone in the room and the one person who I could discuss with, was waiting for my response.

I decided to step out and head to the bookstore. I had nothing in mind but the other choice I had was to remain home and keep brooding over Marco Marchetti and his intentions.

The shop was small and I found the smell of ink and paper oddly calming. I went around the shelves examining notebooks I had no practical use for.

A couple was arguing quietly in the next aisle. The man argued they already had a copy of the book the woman held in her hands. The woman disagreed that it couldn’t be possible. The man countered that the absence of evidence didn’t mean it wasn’t true,

The woman laughed and the argument ended. She held him and he leaned to give a forehead kiss with

twinkles in his eyes.

I stood there longer than was necessary. I couldn’t draw my eyes away from them. So, this was what it felt like to exist without performance,

I smiled, paid for a notebook that I had picked up during my browsing and left.

His follow-up message arrived while I was out. I’m still waiting for your answer.

There was no pressure or desperation behind the message. It was just was it was: a declaration.

I sat at my desk and started typing.

The first version took four minutes to compose. It said a lot but contained nothing. I thanked him for his discretion without acknowledging what I was thanking him for. Reading it after typing it, I realized it was very good but that didn’t stop me from deleting it.

I typed again. I don’t think getting to know me like you expressed earlier is a good idea.

While this was more honest, it reeked of defensiveness. I almost sent it before I shook my head and deleted it.

I was a person who could create, destroy and shape narratives into whatever I wanted but here I was drafting responses and overthinking answers to a simple statement.

I clenched my jaw as I drafted the third version too quickly. This question isn’t simple because anyone who asked for the truth already expected a preferred answer and I’m not sure I know who I am without the preferred answer.

I read it. It was too much vulnerability than I had intended and I sent it before I could changed my mind and delete it.

Dropping the phone, I stared at the ceiling for a while.

I thought about sending a follow-up message that would trivialize the first message I had sent. It was a move I had done many times but I didn’t.
