I stood at the door for some seconds. I shouldn’t be here; I should be anywhere but here but I was. Trying to turn around and leave proved more difficult than imagined. I sighed and finally knocked on the door.

There was some shuffle inside and the hesitant unlocking of the door and Alyssa popped into view. She was in her robe, hair and guard let down, the way people did when they were in their space.

Her eyes narrowed as she saw me standing at her door. I could see the questions behind her eyes as she looked me over.

The silence was getting heavier by the second.

“I’m sorry for dropping by unannounced.”

She nodded as she kept her eyes on me, waiting for more. I heard the sound of feet quickly tearing the ground behind her before hearing the shrill sound of joy. “Papa you came!”

He darted around his mother and somehow squeezed through the opening between her body and the door, launching into me with the agility of a hare.

Without thinking, my arms were outstretched and pointed low, my knees slightly bent as I braced for the impact. I caught and lifted him in one fluid motion just like I had done a thousand times and more.

I saw the wild delight in his eyes at my unexpected visit. Eli saw his father and nothing else unlike Rosaline who hadn’t seen her grandson and thought him a liability for the pack already. He wasn’t a scandal to be managed or a problem waiting to be fixed, he was a boy running into his father’s arms. That was what he was and that was what he was going to remain.

I glanced at Alyssa who watched two of us together. She had crossed her arms, remaining still but I knew that look all too well. The slightly pursed lips, subtle tilt of the head and steady gaze usually meant she was ‘thinking about something; sharing her thoughts were not an option at this time.

It was clear that she knew something was amiss and she also knew better than to ask.

On the other hand, there was no way I was going to say anything. How would it sound? Rosaline wanted her gone because she saw her as a threat to the stability of my marriage and Eli would challenge the line of succession when his identity was discovered. She doesn’t trust your family, not after they destroyed two packs.

I couldn’t tell her that because it would make me the one who brought those thoughts to life and dragging Eli into that conversation was the last thing I would ever do.

“Do you mind if I crash here tonight?” I propped Eli on my arms and waited for her answer.

The subtle glare she gave me hinted her answer already. She had done the calculations already and it was a bad look regardless of how one spun it.

Eli spoke up. “Mama, I want Daddy to stay.”

He turned to her. “Please.”

Alyssa’s eyes flickered and the concreted resolve that was on her face, cracked a bit.

She sighed. “Just for tonight.”

Eli threw his hands in triumph as she moved away from the door. Eli and I both went in immediately before she changed her mind.

He sat on my legs, telling me about his day at the office and asking Alyssa to confirm parts of his narration that I found unbelievable.

After thirty minutes, Alyssa stood up and announced it was time for Eli to go to bed.

Eli tried to make a fuss but Alyssa didn’t budge. “You are already one hour past your bed time. Don’t push your luck.”

He grumbled his tough luck and asked me to follow him to bed. We got his bed and he climbed it, reluctantly. I tucked him in like it was the most natural thing in the world.

I sat down on the bed and asked him. “Dr. Seuss or Tales of the Arabian Night?”

Eli smiled and picked the latter. He paid rapt attention as I read him the story. Towards the end of the story, he began to yawn more frequently and by the end of the story, he was sound asleep.

He barely managed to whisper. “Goodnight papa.”

“Goodnight.” I rubbed his head before standing up.

I sat down on the couch and just stared into space. I could feel Alyssa’s eyes boring into me from behind.. She stood for a while before she went to take a sit across me.

I took out my phone and sent a message to Denise.

I’m at a female friend’s house. I’ll come home tomorrow when she leaves.

I sent it and dropped the phone. The phone chimed and I picked it up.

For some strange reason, I went back to the message I sent Denise and read it again.

What was I thinking? That wasn’t the right question. Why wasn’t I thinking? Because if I was thinking, I wouldn’t have sent that message.

Denise would read it and hear: I was spending the night with another woman.

It didn’t matter the context, after all it was the logical conclusion from the message I had sent.
