Chapter 163

Denise POV

Kieran’s text sat on my phone screen.

Crashing at a female friend’s tonight. Don’t wait up. I read it and dropped the phone without a comment.

There was nothing to say and no point in asking questions.

I expected the house to become empty but it wasn’t. I met Rosaline still at the kitchen table when I went to get a cup of water.

“I thought you left with him.”

“I’m not yet ready to leave.” She filled the kettle like she owned the kitchen and turned on the heat. “Tea?”

“Please.”

She set two cups down and poured tea into each of them with an ease that contrasted with the voices I heard moments earlier. Over time, I knew that ease was like the calm surface of a river that hid the strong undercurrents beneath.

She stirred her tea. “When are you planning to have a child?”

I wasn’t surprised, I had been expecting the question for a while now. ” not anything soon.”

She stared at me as she slipped her tea. “How come?”

I met her eyes. “Let’s see, I have just been married two months. I have a university degree and Luna duties that I’m still getting the hang of and a merger to oversee. A child isn’t next on my list doesn’t mean it isn’t on the list.”

“You have a list.”

“Yes. I have a list of priorities.”

She studied me for a moment, there was no disappointment or anger I expected, just something calculating, moving behind her eyes. “That’s a very modern answer.”

“It’s an honest one.”

“There is no wrong answer. I wanted to hear what you had to say on the matter.”

She wasn’t asking about grandchildren but wanted to get a measure of me, about what I had no idea and children was the instrument she wanted to use.

She set her cup down. “Never let Alyssa be alone with Kieran.”

My eyes widened with surprise, there was no world I expected that statement from her.

I kept my face even. “Why not?”

“I’m not going to explain that tonight.”

1 set down the cup. “You gave me an order without a reason.”

Something closed behind her eyes and I guessed it was the same shutter I imagined Kieran had run into more than once in his life. “I’ve said what I came to say.”

She stood, smoothed her jacket, her voice pleasant once again. “It was a lovely visit. “Thank you for the tea.”

“Rosaline…”

“Good night, Denise.”

She closed the door with a soft touch and I remained at the table for a long moment, looking at the chair she’d occupied, at the cups still sitting there before my gaze turned to my phone.

Crashing at a female friend’s tonight.

I didn’t need to guess who. I knew who she was and it was exactly this reason that Rosaline gave me a warning that she didn’t explain.

Rosaline: don’t let Alyssa be alone with Kieran.

Kieran: staying the night at a female friend’s.

The two pieces sat next to each other so cleanly it felt like a big coincidence and it bothered me.

The story was very obvious. Kieran had gone to Alyssa. Rosaline was warning me or trying to warn me about it happening. Alyssa was trying to reclaim her man and Rosaline was trying to protect her son’s marriage. It was a story as old as time itself.

I had spent weeks watching Alyssa and what I had gleaned didn’t fit what the picture Rosaline was trying to paint.

She hadn’t glimpsed at Kieran if she could help it. She even went out of her way to avoid seeing him.

She’d offered me tea in a kitchen with nothing to gain from the kindness.

She’d been restrained so much in every interaction I’d witnessed that I knew it was deliberate.

There were so many pieces that didn’t fit into this simple story. I needed someone to help me hold all of them at once.

Andrea picked up on the second ring.

“It’s late,” she said, “What’s wrong?”

“Rosaline came by tonight and Kieran left the house.”

“Left where?”

I kept my voice level. “That’s the other part
