Andrea spoke calmly. “I’m still here. Talk to me. Let’s start from the top again so I don’t miss anything.”
I sat down at the kitchen table again, the two cold cups Rosaline had left still in front of me. “Rosaline stayed after Kieran left. She asked when I was planning to have children, told me never keep Kieran away from Alyssa without explaining why and Kieran texted that he’s staying the night at a female friend’s.”
“You think it’s Alyssa.”
“Who else would it be?”
Andrea was quiet for a second. “Okay. Before we go anywhere with Alyssa, I want to tell you something about Dante.”
I steadied myself, something about her tone made me certain that she probably had an explanation that would make some sense about this whole situation.
“Blackwood Enterprises has taken real hits since Elena’s called off the engagement. It was public and ugly. There was fallout from investors after the whole Lyra situation with Grand Aldric. Add the numerous looming lawsuits and his firm valuation is taking a serious hit.”
“So the company’s struggling?”
“This is more than a struggle; it’s a full blown crisis and the only way out of it, is to pull a rabbit out of a hat most times.
I cocked my head to one side. “Rabbit out of a hat?”
“Yes. Something that changes the story people are telling about him.”
‘I struggled to see the connection. “So what has that got to do with me?”
“Because you’re the strongest social rehabilitation available to him.”
I didn’t say anything for a moment.
I heard some shuffle over the line as Andrea arranged herself on a chair. “Picture this for a moment. Kieran Nightshade’s Luna discovers her husband has a secret family. She leaves and returns to the man who wanted a real marriage with her all along. It’s clean. It’s sympathetic. Nobody has to ask hard questions about Dante’s business and his redemption arc is complete.”
“Are you saying Dante planned this?”
“I didn’t say that. All I’m saying is circumstances and chance can make him a winner if every domino falls into place. He doesn’t need to plan anything, all he just needs to do is watch patiently as things falls into place.”
I remained still, my mind working hard as Dante’s face at the wedding came to me: his hand around my

wrist, the ceremony stopping, the humiliation of being escorted out that he’d never fully absorbed. He loved me once upon a time, there was no denying that but I had no idea if that love had been twisted into
strategy.
I could see what Andrea was talking about and it didn’t need anything from Dante except only the ability to recognize an opportunity circumstances had handed him.
I rubbed my forehead. ” Alyssa went to Dante for protection. The threat was real, there was really someone watching her.”
Andrea sighed. “I’m not saying Dante efforts weren’t been genuine.”
I leaned forward, a crease on my forehead. “Then what are you saying?”
“His actions makes Alyssa indebted to him and that’s something that can be leveraged on with or without Alyssa consent.”
I muttered. “She doesn’t come off as that kind of person.”
I meant it. I had been watching her: the careful distance she placed between herself and Kieran, the professionalism she exhibited and the way she treated me as a colleague and not a rival. They weren’t the behaviors of a person who wanted to disrupt my marriage.
Andrea’s voice became somber. ” People change. She’s a single mother in a city she didn’t want to be in. She was being stalked and made a deal with the devil for protection and it’s matter of when not if before said devil cashes in his debt.”
“So she’s not the threat.”
“It might be her or just the situation she founded herself in.”
I went quiet, turning that over. Andrea was right, two things could be true at the same time and I hated that. It would have been much simpler if was really a rival.
“That’s a more complicated picture than I had an hour ago.”
“C’est la vie.”
I thought about it for a while. “I’m not going to call him.”
“I didn’t expect you to.”
“I’m not going to text Alyssa either or confront anyone.”
I said it slowly, still processing the decision as I made it. “Any reaction like going to her address or calling Kieran demanding answers gives Dante exactly what he’d need. A Luna who looks threatened and in an unstable marriage. I don’t want to write his story for him.”
“That’s a good instinct.”
“It’s hard not to…” My voice trailed off.
“Nobody said it would be easy.”
