Alyssa POV

I closed the door and faced Kieran. “Your help is creating problems.”

He shot back. “I was making sure you were safe.”

I kept my voice level. “I know but that’s not the point. Your mother knows I’m in the city. What do you think it looks like him finding you here?”

“I don’t care what it looks like.”

I crossed my arms. “I have to. You care about protecting me but I believe that but it can be costly. Perception matter more than the truth.”

He was quiet for a moment; I noticed his jaw working. “The situation with whoever was watching you—”

I completed his statement for him. “Has been handled.”

“By Dante.” He nearly spat the words out.

“By an associate of Dante.”

He shot me a look and I knew the reason behind it. Kieran had never trusted Dante not once and nothing I said was going to undo years of that instinct in a hotel room at eight in the morning.

I shifted a bit. “I know what he is. I needed help, and he gave me access to people who could provide it. It doesn’t mean I trust him.”

He studied with that pensive look that told me he was considering letting go of what I just said or not.

“Go home, Kieran,” I said.

He didn’t move. This isn’t the time to play smart.

“Go home to your wife.” There wasn’t any malice behind my words. He had a wife and a Luna waiting for him at his penthouse. The longer he stood here, the harder it was going to be for me to keep my composure.

He held my gaze a moment longer before picking up his jacket from the chair and leaving without a word.

I closed the door behind him and stood there for a second.

I hadn’t realized how long I had been holding my breath till I heard the door close. I unclenched my hands and took several breaths to loosen the tightness in my chest.

My moment was caught short as I realized Dante was still in the hallway.

I opened the door again and this time Dante walked in, unhurriedly with that well satisfied look on his face, no doubt from watching Kieran leave.
