Chapter 167

Denise POV

By the fourth day, the

The story began to take a different shape the longer the story remained out there. Most people weren’t encountering the original story but the other people’s version of it.

Climber. Fake Luna. The woman who destroyed Elena and Dante.

At least they were getting creative with the headlines.

I read the comments just once that morning and made a promise to myself: never to read them again.

Reading a few strangers opinion wasn’t going to help me with my case, marriage, education or anything I had control over. So with a resolute chin, I muted the notifications and dropped the phone.

I did my best to keep my promise but there were times I couldn’t help but read it before pushing it away or when I was accosted on the streets or in school.

In school, while walking past a group of students near the lecture hall. I heard one of them whisper something that wasn’t meant for me to hear. I didn’t hear all but enough to understand what was being said.

I kept walking without confronting anybody because nobody had said anything to my face.

At the council office later that day, one of the secretaries handed me a folder but hesitated for some seconds before letting go. She apologized and was too polite, the way somebody was when they wanted to hide their true feelings.

I filed it away without making a fuss. The pattern was now repetitive: I appear somewhere and people do their polite best to give me a small berth that wouldn’t be noticed by anyone except me.

It was the same everywhere but St. Mira’s. Anytime I was there, I was simply Denise and not the Luna of a pack.

She had a grim expression, her voice level. “The children have been asking questions.”

She wasn’t one to make a fuss when there wasn’t, that’s how I knew she was telling me what I needed to know.

“What are they asking?”

“Kofi’s been watching the news. He’s asking if everything they have been saying about you is true.”

I felt a thud in my chest and felt myself waver for a bit. For the past few days, the words and insults hurled never made me feel anything because the people behind them were strangers but Kofi knew me.

“Tell him to come to the phone,” I said.

Mrs. Adeyemi didn’t ask me what I planned to say. She simply nodded and went to find him.

I heard his voice some seconds later; it had a hesitant quality to it like he had been practicing how to ask the questions on his mind.

“Hi, Denise.”

“Hi, Kofi.”

There was a pause. I let it sit and he finally filled it. “Is it true? What people are saying online?”

“What exactly did you see?”
