Chapter 168
Kieran POV
The first call came before nine.
The council elder’s voice was firm. “There is nothing to talk about. You are mated, there is no changing that. The photographs have been publicly discredited and if there is nothing else, this matter is done as long as I’m concerned.”
I was grateful. It was one less trouble. “I appreciate that.”
“There is nothing to appreciate. It is what it is.”
I hung up and I knew better than to give into the relief that was pooling in my stomach.
The second call came in twenty minutes later.
“The alliance and mating stands. No social media is going to set a precedent where a Luna’s position becomes negotiable, not on my watch.
“Thank you.”
That was closer to sentiment than she wanted to admit, and I let her have the distance. “Don’t thank me. Though for what it’s worth, I don’t think the woman did anything wrong.”
The third call was different from the start.
The older Alpha was more concerned. “I’m more concerned about the optics.”
I saw where he was coming from. “The photographs weren’t authenticated and Nightshade’s position is clear on that.”
“I’m taking about the bigger picture. Certain roles can only be carried out by certain temperaments. You know there is a reason traditions exists.”
He had been waiting for the opportunity to raise the matter that he had been sitting on. He was saying an omega didn’t belong in the position Denise held. The scandal was the perfect opportunity for him to raise his concerns.
I shot him down. “Denise is my mated Luna and that’s not open for debate. She stays on as the Luna of the pack and that’s final.”
The Alpha’s voice wavered a bit. “I wasn’t suggesting she should be removed.”
“I know exactly what you were suggesting.”
A pause on the line. “Understood.”
I didn’t need to convince him about changing his stance. He needed to hear my position on the issue. I ended the call satisfied that at least the institutional threat had been contained, even if the underlying attitude hadn’t gone anywhere.
Rosaline stopped by that same afternoon. She joined us in the kitchen with a cup of tea in front of her waiting for me the way she used to when I was younger and had done something she needed to discuss.
She looked composed but I knew better. There was a slight crack in her armor: her smile trembled just slightly, anyone not looking for it would have missed it.
“You look tired,” I said.
