Chapter 169

Lyra POV

I checked the analytics that morning, same way I did ever since the story broke. The engagements had dropped by half and most of the large accounts had taken down their posts.

The council seemed satisfied with Nightshade explanation. Denise’s position was secured as she been sighted in the council office the day before that. She hadn’t disappeared or given Kieran any reason to distance himself from her in public from the looks of things.

It was business as usual or almost and it was infuriating. I had expected the photographs to have caused some friction between Denise and Kieran or made Kieran create distance between him and her but neither of that happened. The Nightshade machinery simply swallowed the attack, spitting back legal notices and statements as a wall to cover her.

I realized with a jolt, why my plans haven’t succeeded.

My attacks failed not because they weren’t carried out properly, they failed because I had chosen the direct route and she had proven herself to be extraordinarily difficult to destabilize from the outside. She had learned, somewhere along the way, to treat every attempt to damage her as a challenged to overcome and not a threat to be scared of.

I thought about the fire. The plan worked in a way the papers didn’t say. It had displaced people and caused real damages. It also made Denise faced circumstances that no crafted statement could have done.

Denise had survived what I had prepared for her that was the uncomfortable conclusion I kept arriving at, no matter how many times I tried to talk myself out of it. Direct attacks damaged her but I didn’t want her damaged; I wanted her obliterated.

Marco had given me the run of the library when he noticed I had begun using it as a thinking space. He never pried about what I was doing in there and I was grateful for that.

I went through what I had so far. Alyssa Stone would be in the same vicinity with Kieran and she brought their child. Denise, Kieran and Kieran’s child between them was already better than any condition I could have crafted.

I was certain that he had kept the child secret from Denise. I just needed to wait when his world and Denise’s world were forced into the same room and waited for the fallout that was sure to happen.

Kieran’s weakness was so obvious nobody picked it up. He was loyal to a fault and had too many things he was loyal too. He had been able to keep it under wraps because so far, they had been kept separate. What happened if they no longer remained separated?
