Chapter 170
Alyssa POV
I stared at the time, trying to keep my cool. This wasn’t going as I had planned. I was five minutes late for a meeting only for Eli to decide he wanted an ice cream and stubbornly refused we went for it after the meeting.
Eli pointed to the shelf. “I don’t want this. I want the other one.”
I rolled my eyes with the a slight exasperation that I barely kept out of my voice. “They are both strawberry.”
He insisted. “They are not the same strawberry.”
I muttered under my breaths as I stared at the two cups. They looked the same as far I could tell but I picked up the one he was pointing. It wasn’t worth the energy I would have expended in a fight.
“Thank you.” he slid his hand back into mine while I paid. He was staring around the counter with the childish delight of a kid who was pleased at having his way.
We went out and went down the our normal route. A vase seller who opened every morning waved is as we past him. Eli was narrating something a dog he had watched on a documentary some days ago.
“Do you think a dog can do that?” he said.
“I think it’s possible.”
“Do you think I can see him one day?”
“Maybe.”
A delivery truck was parked at the corner, its engine running as someone carried boxes into a shop. It was an ordinary Tuesday. Cars and a bus parked behind us and someone’s radio filtering out into the air. I had a bag in each hand with Eli’s fingers around mine. I was thinking about whether we had enough milk at home.
I forced myself to relax, telling myself that the stalker had been identified and neutralized.
A white van was wrongly packed, engine still running. A frown crossed my face as I registered as an obstruction to walk around and started angling us toward the road side to get past it.
Then the smell hit me with a force that rang alarm bells in my head. There was something sharp underneath the smell that my body understood immediately before my mind could finish processing it.
The side door slid open. I didn’t think; there wasn’t time to think.
Both bags dropped from my hand and the yoghurt splattered as the bags hit the pavement. My hand found Eli’s shoulder and shoved him behind as I used my body as a shield.
Something moved too quickly for me to realize what it was. It moved with the kind of speed that told me this was rehearsed.
