Chapter 171
Kieran POV
The board was still discussing quarterly projections when my phone moved on the table. I stared at the caller ID. It was Alyssa.
My gaze lingered on the screen. I almost thought I was seeing wrong. Why would she be calling? I had been texting her but she hadn’t been responding. Whatever it was could wait.
I almost let it go to voicemail but my wolf moved in my chest. Answer. It growled and prowled my chest. My wolf was always piqued when it came to Alyssa but never agitated and certainly not like this.
I picked the phone and stepped to a side and whispered. “Alyssa?”
There was no reply and I was about to end the call on the assumption it was a misdial when I heard the quick breathing that told me something was very wrong.
Eli spoke rapidly in between his pants. “Bad man. Mama gone.”
Everything in the room disappeared. Sounds and conversations became as my heart thudding grew louder in my ears.
I heard someone at the table call my name but I was already moving toward the door, phone pressed hard to my ear. “Eli. It’s Papa. I’m here.”
“Mama gone,” he said again.
I paced myself as my voice became low. It needed to be cool enough to relax a frightened child. “Where are you, buddy? Can you tell me what you see?”
“There is yoghurt on the ground.”
I looked around. “Okay. That’s very good of you. Can you see cars?”
“Yes. The road is wide and there are lots of cars.”
“Is there someone with you?”
“Yes. There is a woman here.”
There was a pause, and then I heard the woman’s voice. “Hello? I’m sorry, I found him alone. There’s been some kind of incident, someone should-”
My protective instincts kicked in. “I’m his father. Please stay with him. I’m coming right now. What street are you on?”
She gave me the address and I was already in the elevator by the time she finished.
I broke every speed limit as I raced through the city, dodging cars and running red lights. I had one hand on the steering and one pressing the phone to my ear as I did my best to reassure Eli was going to be alright.
I drove as my mind raced through the events of the last few weeks. I knew she had a stalker that had made her gone to Dante. Why was Eli left behind? Was it some kind of error or was it deliberate? None of the answers gave me any comfort. one and Eli was alone, and I was the only person who could get to him fast enough.
I got there and took in the scene immediately: spilled groceries, split yoghurt across the pavement, a small crowd already gathering and a woman crouched down with a phone in her hand.
