Chapter 172

Denise POV

I woke up slowly, coming around slowly than opening your eyes.

The cold air chilled me as goosebumps made their claim on my skin. There was the smell of old metal and rust of machines that hadn’t run for years.

I moved my arms and my shoulder blades protested loudly. My wrists were bound behind me and my ankles. I moved against the restraints and nothing gave way.

The knots were cleanly done and seemed to hold properly. It was done by experts, no doubt. I reached for my wolf the way I would reach for a light switch in a dark room whenever I needed to understand a threat.

She was muffled and sounded far away like somebody talking through doors. She was present enough but not strong enough to be of any help.

I went very still. Someone had gone a long way to ensure the success of their plan. The attackers had been prepared for what we were, the chemical signature was already evidence of that. I still had no idea what it was but I knew all too well what it could do.

I dammed the waves of panic that almost overflowed in me and looked around. The structural beams overhead were rusted, there was no visible window at the ground level, no traffic sound that suggested proximity to the highway and no cameras which meant there wasn’t. There was only a single exit I could find.

Escape was a far-fetched notion for now. My wolf was compromised and I was still bound. Sighing, I turned my head and saw her.

Alyssa. She was still knocked out by whatever we were given and bounded the same way I was: wrists behind her back and ankles bound to whatever support she was tied against.

Unconscious, a few feet away, restrained the same way I was wrists behind her back, ankles bound, slumped slightly against whatever she was tied to.

It wasn’t hard to recognize her even in the disheveled state she was. I had seen her far too many times not to be able to recognize her.

Was she dead? I felt a rush of trepidation through me and then I saw her chest rise and fall steadily.

Thank goodness. She was alive.

The fact that she was restrained exactly as I was told me this was no random an accident that had swept me up alongside her.

Whatever this was, it was created with both of us in mind.

The door opened and my attention turned to it immediately, every part of me going alert despite my muffled wolf and restraints.

A masked man walked in with the kind of pace that told me he wasn’t expecting any interruption.

He crouched in front of me, close enough that I could see his eyes through the mask and nothing else.
