Chapter 173
Denise POV
The factory was silent again he left, leaving me with nothing to do but to swim among the current of thoughts he had left me with. Alyssa arranged this. She’s been working with Dante. He’s going to pick her.
There was something about the way he had phrased the sentences. Words shouldn’t be stuck to each other like bricks and tar. A story this airtight always ended up being more than just a story.
I winced a bit as I inched forward a bit. He had done his part, whether it was or true or not was up to me to decide that.
I remembered Rosaline warning never to let Alyssa be alone with Kieran and her refusal to explain the warning. Now, it was almost too easy to let that warning become proof.
I wiggled on the floor again. A warning wasn’t the same as evidence. Rosaline was suspicious of Alyssa because of her family name and that wasn’t any proof that Alyssa had anything to do with this.
Andrea’s voice came back and flooded my mind. What if Alyssa is letting Dante use her?
That was the questioned that tethered its hooks unto my mind and refused to let go despite my many attempts to the contrary. The major reasons for that was because it was the perfect conclusion from every single of evidence I already had. I knew there was some contact between them but I didn’t know the details to be able to prove some sort of conspiracy. Those weren’t the same thing, and the masked man had been counting on me not noticing the difference.
My mind was avalanching down the mountain of thoughts searching for anything that would make or break the story I had been given.
There was a couple of meetings between Dante and Alyssa which was uncovered by Kieran’s team but contact wasn’t conspiracy and they could have met for entirely different reasons.
Eli calling Kieran “Papa” in the lobby proved that Kieran was his father but said totally nothing about what Alyssa wanted from me.
After the argument with his mother, Kieran had spent the night at Alyssa’s place which had hurt like hell, but that wasn’t proof of anything despite how convenient that piece of evidence was dressed as coincidence.
Every thing my captor had told me was real. They happened but they had been stacked in a way to build a narrative that wasn’t there.
I smiled a little, it was almost brilliant. Stacked together, they looked like a case but individually, none of them proved what he needed me to believe.
Because I made myself look at Alyssa properly for the first time. She was unconscious and pale looking. She bled from a cut that seem deep but not serious on her face. Her breathing was now steadier than before.
My mind went on a quest into the past. I went through all the conversations both professional and personal with her and she never for once, in my presence or otherwise, tried to embarrass me or claim territory that wasn’t hers.
I sighed a bit as I shifted or tried to my weight on side before thinking of Eli. He had obviously been told by Alyssa to not call Kieran papa in public. I could only think about two reasons for it: she wanted to conceal his identity as a secret to be used in a situation that would be advantageous to her or it was a mother protecting her child from a scandal she had no ability to control.
It could be any of them or both but the second reason was more consistent with her previous actions.
