Chapter 174

Alyssa POV

I immediately became alert the way I taught myself years ago: no wasted motion, just a fast inventory of everything around me.

My wrists and ankles were bound behind me. I was restrained to a beam that nestled between my shoulders blades, I sought my wolf but found her knocked out, unable to help for the next duration of what was to come. I casted my mind away from that thought, no use focusing on what was out of reach.

The only thing I could focus on was to glean any piece of information from the environment that was helpful to me. I categorized the information into two boxes.

The first box was useful: the restraints, the bomb, the beam we were restrained to. Possible exits and proximity of people to the area. I pushed away the panicking questions away as I focused on the useful questions that could yield the right answer.

I refused to think about why they’d chosen us Whether Kieran was looking or what Denise thought about me.

Those question were crucial but not for the situation at hand and I didn’t have the luxury of spending attention on anything that didn’t move us closer to surviving the next two hours.

I looked at the column we were restrained to. It was old, rusty an original part of the building before it was converted to an industrial space. The years of neglect was obvious, as it became bent from being exposed to the weather.

I turned my attention to the bolts that held our restraints to the beam. They were newer and shone with a metallic brilliance against the aging concrete.

Someone had needed something strong enough to hold two werewolves and had built this structure which told me that they were well prepared. I chucked that into a mental folder and said nothing yet. There wasn’t a plan yet but something was beginning to form in my head.

I looked at Denise. She seemed quiet but it’s wasn’t her composed quiet that I had come to recognize over weeks of working in the same vicinity with her. I could see her jaw working which told me she was working something over, deciding whether to believe it.

I didn’t ask what they told her. If our captors wanted her doubting me, asking about what they had told her would only increase her suspicion rather than douse it. We had two hours and forty-three minutes and neither of us could afford to spend them arguing about a story someone else had constructed.

I checked the timer again. The red digits showed: Two hours and forty-three minutes.

I broke the problem into different workable pieces. Was the beam strong and how sensitive were the pressure triggers? Could any of us move without triggering it? Was anybody coming to save us?

I also knew I needed to conserve my strength while my wolf was still down and out.

There wasn’t any need to speak so I said nothing, watching and trying to build the blueprint of something that looked like an escape, one piece at a time in my head.

And then, underneath all of it, the thing I’d been keeping at the edge of my attention finally pushed forward.
