Ariana let out a soft chuckle.
She couldn’t pinpoint exactly when it had happened, but her heart had truly turned as cold and unyielding as stone. Maybe her mother was right—perhaps she was cold-blooded by nature.
Fanny hesitated, unsure of what to say. She wanted to cheer Ariana up, but Ariana’s expression was so calm, not exactly unhappy. What if she ended up saying something foolish and made Ariana feel worse?
That would be unforgivable.
After wrestling with her thoughts for a moment, Fanny decided to bring up Ariana’s daughter instead.
As the days passed, Ariana’s daughter had grown stronger, no longer as fragile as she had been at birth. She had even gained a little height—at least now, she didn’t look like she might shatter at the slightest touch. That was the one thing that brought Ariana and Lambert some comfort.
Perhaps out of guilt for his past negligence as a father, or perhaps because he genuinely cherished this daughter, Lambert no longer treated her with the same indifference he had shown his three sons. Nearly half of his daily hospital visits were spent by her side.
Yet, none of this could bridge the growing distance between him and Ariana. A creeping sense of dread gnawed at Lambert—the fear that they were drifting further apart. But he had no idea how to fix it. His frustration spilled over into his work, making his temper increasingly volatile.
Now, every employee at the company trembled at the sight of Lambert.
They prayed not to catch his attention.
These days, being noticed by the CEO was nothing short of a curse.
In the past, a minor mistake at work would only earn a frown from him. Now, he’d fix you with an icy stare—one that sent cold sweat trickling down your back.
It was absolutely horrifying.
As for Georgia, although only Ariana and Fanny had been present when she made those remarks, secrets cease to be secrets once a third or fourth person learns of them. Soon enough, Gilbert uncovered the truth.
The revelation devastated him.
Never had he imagined that the wife he had cherished all these years had been deceiving him—
Inside the hospital room.
Ariana gazed at her father, who seemed to have aged a decade overnight, her heart aching. In a low voice, she murmured, "I'm sorry, Dad."
Gilbert forced a strained smile. "What does this have to do with you? You didn’t know."
Seeing his familiar expression, though tinged with a trace of melancholy at the edges, Ariana felt a storm of emotions.
She met his eyes steadily. "Let Kiara inherit everything from the White family. Don’t worry—I’ll help her. As long as I’m here, I’ll do everything in my power to ensure the White Corporation remains stable until she’s capable of managing it on her own."
Her words first stunned Gilbert, then left him resigned.
He shook his head. "Don’t talk nonsense. Even if you aren’t my biological daughter, after all these years, you might as well be. You’re my daughter, and the White Corporation is yours to inherit. I’m not some old-fashioned relic who insists on bloodline succession. Don’t ever bring this up again."
Gilbert knew his daughter might not even need the White Corporation.
She was thinking of their past fights—over Georgia, over his perceived favoritism.
Gilbert sighed.
He gently patted Ariana's head and said, "In the past, I was also at fault." He had been so preoccupied with Georgia that he had neglected his own daughter.
Looking back, he should have noticed Georgia's strange behavior much earlier.
How could he have failed to see that something was wrong when Georgia ignored their only daughter?
Gilbert let out a bitter laugh.
Disappointment and a pang of pain twisted in his chest.
It was time for a divorce.
After all, the man she truly loved had never been him—and frankly, he didn’t want to continue this farce anymore. Perhaps the Georgia he had once loved so deeply had died long ago.
After a heavy silence, Gilbert pushed the thought aside and changed the subject. "Ariana, how are things between you and Lambert?"
Ariana’s eyes flickered slightly before she murmured, "Fine."
Gilbert nodded in relief. "Good, that puts my mind at ease. Since this was all a misunderstanding, don’t hold it against Lambert. As for that Irene—" His voice turned icy. "She dared to harm you and my granddaughter. She won’t get away with it. Don’t listen to a word of your mother’s pleas on her behalf." He paused, then added coldly, "Besides, she was never your real sister to begin with."
