Jane’s face paled as she looked at Rawls, unsure how to explain herself.
After a long pause, she finally spoke. "I’m sorry, Rawls. I... I haven’t been in the best mood today." Then, turning to her son, she forced a gentle smile. "Sorry, Roy. Mommy didn’t mean to snap at you earlier."
But Royce only shrank back, nestling deeper into Rawls’ arms.
Jane’s expression stiffened with embarrassment.
Rawls, oblivious to her discomfort, held Royce for a moment longer before handing him off to his assistant.
Seizing the opportunity, Jane stepped closer, gazing at Rawls with tender affection. "Rawls, it’s been so long since you last visited. Have you been busy?" Her admiration for him was genuine.
He was gentle, charming, and undeniably handsome—with status and prestige to match.
The perfect man, by any woman’s standards.
The only frustration? His kindness wasn’t reserved for her alone. Rawls had endless patience for any woman who caught his interest.
Meeting Jane’s adoring gaze, Rawls nodded. "Yes."
She leaned in, intending to kiss his forehead—a prelude to warming things up for later. But just as she moved closer, Rawls sidestepped her.
Jane froze. This was the first time he had ever avoided her touch.
Her face darkened with humiliation.
"Rawls?" she asked weakly.
Instead of addressing her confusion, he shifted the subject, his tone polite but distant. "I’ve found someone I wish to marry. Though it’s regrettable, I’m afraid our relationship must come to an end."
His expression remained utterly unchanged as he spoke those words.
Those light brown eyes still held the same depth and allure that could drown a person.
Yet, Jane's face paled.
She forced a faint smile and said, "No, Rawls, we can continue this relationship. I don’t mind being your lover."
Rawls paused briefly, then chuckled lightly. "I’m afraid you’ve misunderstood. I currently have no interest in maintaining affairs after marriage. This is an important union for me—I’m sure you understand. Right? You can take Royce with you when you marry, of course. Or I could adopt him."
He said 'adopt,' not 'acknowledge.'
The meaning couldn’t be clearer.
Jane’s expression darkened. She had never imagined Rawls could be so heartless. Every time he looked at her, his gaze was so tender—she had truly believed he cared for her. But now, those very same eyes that once seemed warm now felt utterly cold to her.
"Of course, I can grant you one request—as a farewell to our time together," Rawls said smoothly, his tone as composed as ever.
Though resentment simmered inside her, Jane suppressed it with effort.
She knew Rawls disliked anyone challenging his decisions. Pushing too hard might only earn his disdain. So, for now, she swallowed her emotions. She refused to believe he could truly restrain himself after marriage.
Yet, at his offer, a glimmer of hope flickered in her eyes.
Softly, she asked, "Really?"
Rawls: "Of course. As long as it’s within my power."
Jane’s gaze shifted thoughtfully before she finally replied, "Alright… There is something I’d like your help with."
