Irene thought Georgia had come to gloat.
Even though she had stood by her side before, Georgia was still Ariana’s biological mother. After everything that had happened, she must have realized by now that Irene had deceived her. Surely, she was here to demand answers.
Irene had no other options left.
No one could help her now.
So the moment she saw Georgia, she burst into tears as if clutching at her last lifeline.
She knew Georgia was weak to this kind of display. It didn’t matter how—she just couldn’t end up in prison. If she did, her life would truly be over.
Watching Irene’s tearful remorse, Georgia trembled with heartache. "Don’t apologize," she said, her voice breaking. "I know… I know this isn’t your fault. Please, don’t cry. It hurts me to see you like this."
Irene froze.
She studied Georgia’s face, searching for any trace of deception. After a pause, realization dawned in her eyes, igniting a fierce glimmer of hope.
Tears still clinging to her lashes, she whispered in disbelief, "You… you believe me?"
Her voice carried the fragile tremor of someone who had long given up fighting, only to be stunned by an unexpected ally.
The sight of it twisted Georgia’s heart even more.
Biting back her own tears, she said firmly, "Of course I believe you. Even if you did it, it couldn’t have been your true intention. Ariana went too far. She took everything from you and still treated you this way. Anyone would have snapped." She reached out, gripping Irene’s hand reassuringly. "But don’t worry. I’ll get you out of this. As Ariana’s mother, I can withdraw the lawsuit on her behalf. You won’t have to be afraid anymore."
At that moment…
Irene didn’t know what to feel toward the woman who should have been the last person to stand by her—the mother of the very person she had once despised.
She gazed at her with a complicated expression for a long moment before finally forcing out the words, "Thank you."
Georgia softened her tone. "Silly child, what are you thanking me for? None of this was ever your fault." But even as she spoke, bitterness coiled in her chest. She despised Kendra—loathed her for showing not an ounce of maternal warmth toward her own daughter, for ruining her life just to protect her biological child.
Even her marriage...
Gone.
There was no way Gilbert could have known about her past unless Kendra had told him.
The hatred burned inside her, sharp and unrelenting. How could Kendra be so ruthless? So cruel?
And to think she had naively raised a girl with the same cold nature all these years. If she had known it would come to this, she would have left the child at an orphanage rather than raise her for Kendra.
Though not fully incarcerated yet, visitation hours were still limited. When the officer reminded her, Georgia swallowed her resentment, bid Irene a quick farewell, and headed straight for the courthouse.
Just as she had vowed earlier.
She would withdraw the lawsuit as the plaintiff's family member.
If Ariana dared to press charges, she would die right in front of her—let the whole world see how the wife of Stone Corporation's CEO drove her own mother to suicide. She was certain Ariana would crumble under the threat. Even if she didn’t care about her reputation, surely the Stone family would.
...
Lambert was at the hospital when the news from the courthouse reached him.
This matter was naturally relayed to Lambert by his lawyer. Upon hearing the news, Lambert narrowed his eyes and stated coldly, "She has no right to withdraw the lawsuit. I'm the one who sued Irene. No one but the plaintiff has the authority to drop the charges on my behalf."
The lawyer promptly agreed.
