Ariana suppressed a chuckle.
She cleared her throat softly and waved a hand. “Bring it here.”
Kiara practically bounded over with relief, carefully unpacking the lunchboxes. Though it was takeout, Assistant Hills’s efficiency was undeniable—he’d never settle for anything less than clean, quality food.
Authentic Eastern cuisine might be scarce in the U.S., but who was Assistant Hills if not resourceful? As an all-around capable assistant, tracking down a decent meal was child’s play.
When Kiara lifted the lids, her eyes instantly lit up.
It smelled absolutely amazing!
Inside, among other dishes, was a container of mild millet porridge, perfect for soothing the stomach. Ariana had just woken up and wasn’t particularly hungry, but she needed something gentle to settle her stomach. The porridge suited her perfectly.
She took a small sip, and her eyes curved into satisfied crescents.
Once again, her opinion of Assistant Hills rose several notches.
Meanwhile, Lambert picked at his food with a sulky expression. Ariana stole an amused glance at his clearly displeased face, then turned to Kiara with a gentle tone. “By the way, Kiara, Dad’s birthday is in eight days.”
Kiara blinked. “Uncle’s birthday?”
Ariana nodded. “Yes. I’ve already started making arrangements, but I’m stretched thin and can’t handle everything. You’re a sophomore now—your schedule isn’t too demanding. Could you help me out?”
Kiara didn’t hesitate. “Of course!”
Even though she didn't fully understand, she mustered her courage and nodded firmly. "Alright!" She knew Ariana was still recovering from her injuries and couldn't afford to overexert herself.
Ariana smiled softly before adding, "Once we return to the country, I'll be working at White Corporation. You'll be my assistant."
Before a stunned Kiara could respond, Lambert frowned and interjected, "You're going back to White Corporation?"
Ariana turned to him and nodded. "Yes." Her father's energy was limited, and White Corporation was steadily declining. She could see how difficult it was for him to keep the company afloat. Even without looking into it, she could guess that her uncle, Nicholas, had long been eyeing the family business.
Though White Corporation was a shadow of its former glory, even a dying camel is bigger than a horse. No matter how poorly it performed, the company was still worth billions if liquidated. In the past, Ariana would have stayed out of it. But after their recent heart-to-heart conversation, she realized her father's affection for her was genuine.
How could she stand by and watch others swallow White Corporation, her father's lifelong work destroyed in an instant?
She had already made up her mind.
She would return to White Corporation and take Kiara under her wing. After mentoring her for a few years, she would hand the company over to her. It would be her way of repaying her father for all his years of care.
Lambert grasped her intentions almost instantly.
He knew exactly what she planned to do.
Yet, he still frowned in concern. "Your health isn't up to it."
Ariana sighed lightly. "It's just a bit of low blood pressure—nothing serious. Don't worry." She assumed he was still shaken by her recent fainting spell from blood loss.
Lambert studied her with a furrowed brow but said nothing more.
His silence was a tacit agreement.
Kiara looked up at Ariana with a hesitant expression, her brows slightly furrowed. "Ariana... I'm not sure I can do this," she murmured. Having never worked as an assistant before, the thought of taking on such a role in a major corporation made her anxious. What if she made mistakes and ended up causing trouble for Ariana?
