As Ariana stepped out of the hospital room, all eyes turned to her. Since Khloe wasn’t present, Aster was the first to speak up. "How is mother? Did she say anything?"
Ariana replied calmly, "Grandmother’s spirits are holding up, but she still needs rest."
She offered nothing more.
Aster frowned, about to press further, but Second Uncle held up a hand to stop her. He sighed and said to Ariana with a resigned tone, "Ariana, we’re all worried about your grandmother in this state. You know how much she adores you. Why don’t you take care of her for the time being?"
Ariana’s brow twitched slightly.
She glanced at Second Uncle, then let her gaze flicker toward Eldest Uncle, who remained silent.
With a light chuckle, she nodded. "I was already planning to, even without your suggestion. Don’t worry, Second Uncle. I’ll take good care of Grandmother."
Second Uncle smiled approvingly—though if one ignored the fleeting glint in his eyes, his expression seemed nothing more than a simple, earnest request.
As the third granddaughter-in-law, Ariana’s presence meant Madelyn and Gwen naturally had to step up as well. Both promptly declared they would stay by Ariana’s side to look after the old lady.
At this, Second Uncle’s brow furrowed briefly, but whatever thought crossed his mind, he chose not to voice it.
He acquiesced silently.
Throughout the exchange, Lambert had been quietly observing the expressions of both the first and second branches of the family. Only after taking in everyone’s reactions did he speak up in a measured tone. "There are too many people here right now—Grandmother likely doesn’t need all of us. Eldest Uncle, Second Uncle, Ariana, and I will take our leave for now. She’ll return this evening. If anything comes up, you can call either of us."
After all, crowding the room served little purpose.
Besides, Gwen and Madelyn had already made it clear they’d be staying outside the ward all day.
Ariana's presence or absence had become inconsequential.
Aster let out a mocking laugh. "Lambert truly dotes on his wife. After all these years, their affection remains as strong as when they first married."
Lambert responded with a hollow smile. "Aunt Aster, you jest. Hasn’t Uncle treated you with unwavering devotion for decades as well?"
Aster’s expression darkened instantly, her face flushing with a mix of embarrassment and simmering anger at his sarcasm.
Without sparing another glance at his visibly irritated aunt, Lambert turned his gaze to Ariana. "Let’s go." Then, as if remembering something, he paused and glanced toward Jaxson, who had been standing silently in the corner with an indifferent expression. "The company is busy. You should come with me too."
His tone was casual, almost dismissive, as if it didn’t matter to him whether Jaxson followed or not.
That was just Lambert’s nature—rarely bothering to extend an invitation to anyone. After uttering those words, he paid no further attention to Jaxson, simply taking Ariana’s hand and leading her toward the corridor exit. As for Jaxson, he remained motionless for about a minute before finally stepping forward in their direction.
This drew a frown from the eldest uncle.
Watching Jaxson’s retreating figure, Aster smirked and turned to the eldest uncle. "Elder Brother, it seems your son has caught the favor of our future family head. Who knows? He might even become his right-hand man someday."
