The moment the words left my mouth, my heart seemed to stop, my gaze dropping to the floor as the intensity of his eyes became unbearable.
What had I done… What the hell had I just done?
Alvise snatched his hands off me and took a step back, the absence of his touch sending a cold wave over my skin. I couldn’t look at him… Couldn’t even try.
Tears welled in my eyes, bile rising to my throat as a crushing wave of disgust settled over me… for myself… for my words.
“Get. Out.” Alvise snapped, his voice so harsh I flinched and took a step back.
He wasn’t looking at me. He wasn’t even facing me. I clasped my hands together, throwing my head back to stop the tears. but they refused to stop.
I didn’t want to say it, but I had to. If I told him the truth… it wouldn’t make a difference. Francesca would release the pictures and then… I’d be the one to ruin his life. I just couldn’t do that to him. I couldn’t let anyone see those photos. It would literally ruin my life… our lives, and it would be my fault.
My fault.
“Did you not fucking hear me?” Alvise’s voice thundered through the office. “Get the fuck out!”
I’d never seen him like this, and it terrified me. I’d never found him frightening until this moment. My fear took over, and I dashed for the door, not daring to look back. The moment I stepped out, I heard the lock click behind me.
He locked the door.
I wrapped my arms around myself as a sob tore out of me, but I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t do anything except collapse to the floor and cry, sobbing uncontrollably until I could barely hear the sound of my own voice.
I caused this… But I had no choice. It was getting harder to stay away from him, and Francesca was going to carry out her threat if I didn’t control myself. I knew I couldn’t, and that’s why I wanted him to hate me.
I wanted to make him hate me even more than he already did, so why did it hurt so much? Why did it feel like my heart was bleeding while there was nothing I could do to stop it?
I wiped the tears from my face, but more kept coming… Over and over again until I finally let my hands fall limply to my sides.
Weak and exhausted, I forced myself to my feet and decided to leave. It would be selfish of me to keep lingering around his office after everything I’d done.
On unsteady legs, I walked past his secretary’s desk. It was empty. She’d probably already left since it was quite late. I walked to the elevator, pressed the button, and stepped inside when the doors slid open.
I wallowed in my thoughts the entire elevator ride, and when I reached the first floor, I hesitantly stepped out.
