As I lay on the bed, the morning light streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over my skin. Thoughts of last night flooded my mind, sending literal goosebumps racing across my body.

The stranger, Henry, had been adamant about booking a hotel room for me since I refused to tell them my address. I eventually agreed, and his driver, whom I later found out was called Theo, drove us to the hotel.

I expected it to be a basic motel or somewhere cheap. I wouldn’t have minded even if it was because I was helpless and had nothing on me, but Henry booked me a room in a five-star hotel, one I was sure cost a fortune. He also had a staff member, bring me fresh clothes to change into before they left and promised to come see me in the morning.

I was so numb and exhausted that all I did was take a hot shower and collapse onto the bed.

Now… I was finally realizing just how reckless I’d been.

A knock suddenly echoed through the room, snapping me out of my thoughts. My heart raced as I jumped off the bed and walked to the door, taking a deep breath before unlocking it.

“Good morning,” Henry said, flashing me a smile. He was fully dressed in a black suit, looking as though he was on his way to work.

I swallowed as my eyes shifted from him to Theo. “Good… morning…” I sneezed into my elbow. “T-thank you.”

Theo narrowed his eyes. “You’ve finally realized we aren’t serial killers, right?”

I bit my lip, unsure of what to say before Henry chimed in. “Don’t pay him any mind,” he said gently. “Do you want to leave

now?”

I blinked in confusion. “You’ll drop me off?” I asked, surprised.

Henry nodded. “Sure. I know you don’t have anything with you.”

That was true.

I was completely helpless, and even though I was still wary of them, I didn’t know what would’ve happened if they hadn’t helped me.

Another sneeze threatened to escape, but I held it back and cleared my throat.

“Please… give me a minute,” I said, my voice barely audible as I fidgeted with the belt of my robe. “I need to freshen up.”

“Sure. We’ll be waiting in the lobby,” Henry said, his eyes soft. “Let me know if you need anything, okay?”

Surprised by his continued kindness, I nodded mechanically before turning around, ignoring Theo’s curious glances and shutting the door.

I let out a tense breath just as a sneeze tore through me, sending shivers through my body.

It was confirmed. I was sick.

I rushed into the bathroom and took another hot shower before using mouthwash and changing into my clothes from yesterday. A staff member had collected them for laundry the previous night and returned them that morning because I’d refused to wear the clothes they’d brought me.
