Ruined By My Brother’s Best Friend

It was the first time he’d spoken to me since he threw me out of his office. I didn’t know why, but I never expected his first words to me to be an order. It didn’t sit right with me.

ially snapped out of my trance, his words hitting me like a slap across the face. “I will speak to anyone I want to.”

“I wasn’t asking you.”

“I don’t take orders from you.”

“Interesting information,” he said dryly. “You’re not speaking to him. And that’s final.”

Annoyed, I shook my head and stepped back, putting some distance between us. It felt necessary because it was obvious! couldn’t think straight whenever he was this close.

“I am NOT going to stop speaking to him, Alvise,” I gritted before turning around.

A guard stepped in front of me, blocking my path. I let out a tense breath and turned back to face Alvise,

He raised a brow. “I thought you were going somewhere.”

I rolled my eyes. “Haha. Funny.” Placing a hand on my hip, I blinked at him. “Tell him to let me go.”

“And if I don’t?”

“I’ll scream.”

Alvise grazed his thumb over his lips. “Try it, Arabella. I dare you.”

I couldn’t. I knew it…. He knew it. The guards probably knew it too.

Defeated, my shoulders sagged as I sighed. “What do you want?”

“Nothing that you could ever offer,” he said calmly, his gaze never leaving mine.

Ouch.

That hurt.

He always had a way of striking exactly where it hurt most. But I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of seeing it. Not after our last encounter.

“Since you’ve made that abundantly clear, permit me to ask why your guard is still refusing to let me get back to work,” 1 said, my voice clipped with frustration.

He looked completely unfazed. Instead, he radiated an almost unsettling calmness and indifference as he crossed his ankles. “How do you know him?”

My chest tightened. He was talking about Henry.

I looked away. “Why do you want to know?”

“When I ask you a question, Arabella, answer it.”

I looked back at him. “He picked me up last week.”

Alvise scraped his tongue over his teeth. “The same man that dropped you off.”

It wasn’t a question. I knew it. Not because of the way he phrased it, but because I could tell he recognized Henry.

“Yes,” I breathed.

And you don’t know him?” he asked, his voice hard.

I furrowed my brows, unsure where this conversation was headed. I frowned. “Not exactly… no.”

“So you let a man you don’t fucking know,” Alvise said, stroking his chin, “drive you home. And then you conveniently meet him outside your workplace?”

My frown deepened. “Well, he helped me when I was stranded in the rain, so I don’t think I had much of a choice.”

Anger flashed in his eyes. “And whose fault was that?”

Was he seriously trying to blame me for being stranded in the rain too?

“You sent me out of your office!” I snapped before I could stop myself.

I regretted it immediately. It wasn’t his fault. None of this was. I pushed him to do it… and I was the one who chose to walk out into the rain.

Alvise slowly shook his head, something sardonic flickering in his eyes.

“Trust me,” he said, his voice so harsh that I flinched, “I could have done far worse.”
