Alvise’s words lingered in the air, heavy with the promise of a threat that could have become reality as he pushed off the car and got in.
I could only watch, stunned into silence, as he started the engine. The guard behind me gently pulled me to the side just as Alvise reversed and drove away.
His guards hurried into the SUV before following behind him.
I was too shocked to even wonder why he always needed so many guards, so I simply turned around and headed back to work.
Leah’s scowling face was the first thing I saw the moment I reached the reception.
“Why did you take so long?”
I ignored her and sidestepped her, but she grabbed my wrist and pulled me back. “I’m speaking to you.”
I snatched my hand away from her. “And I just chose not to answer.”
She scoffed. “A little attention, and suddenly you think you can speak to me that way?”
I rolled my eyes. “Your obsession with me is getting tiring. Don’t you think so?”
“I am not obsessed with you!”
“Debatable… and you know it.” I folded my arms. “Otherwise, don’t you think it’s rather weird that you’re standing out here waiting for me?”
“I wasn’t waiting for you,” she gritted. “I just wanted to make sure you didn’t use this as an excuse not to return to work.”
I nodded thoughtfully. “And do you do this for every single employee here?”
“Well…” Her face fell. “Don’t ask me questions.”
“Therapy, Leah,” I said as I walked away. “Try getting some.”
I pushed my office door open and let out a relieved breath the moment I stepped inside.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” Sierra said.
I jumped, startled. “You scared me!” I yelped. “I had no idea you were still in the office. Isn’t it time for your lunch break?”
Sierra grinned mischievously. “It’s also time for yours, but you aren’t eating now, are you?”
I scoffed, but she continued. “No, you aren’t. Instead, you were busy talking to a multimillionaire.”
My brows knitted together. “What do you mean?”
Sierra stretched her arms and cracked her knuckles before opening her personal laptop and typing away.
“As your best friend and self-acclaimed investigator, I took it upon myself to find out who this ‘Henry Ashford’ is.” She placed a hand on her chest. “Because I obviously can’t have you talking to a man we know absolutely nothing about, can I?”
Curious, I walked over, stood behind her, and leaned over her shoulder. “What did you find?”
